I'll try again lol

i am looking to up grade my basic sytem of Cambridge Audio A1 mk3, technics SLPG4 cd and Gale Gold monitors and whilst they sound ok they do sound a little hard and can get tiring, i would like to get something a lot more expansive with rich deep bass and a well detailed top end.

I do like the idea of floorstanders and perhaps a bigger/better amp to drive them? what amp / speaker combo's would give me close to what i am after, i have a budget of £400 to £500 and will be sourcing from ebay, in what order do i need to change the components?

Thanks for your time

Billy

Speakers will make the biggest change to the sound, but I would be looking to change the amp first. You could get a Rega Brio-R ex dem and then save up a little more for the speakers. Rega RS1's would be a good match. As always nothing beats a trip to your local hifi store to listen to some kit and see what you like.

Sorry, I'm going to follow CarlDW's amp theme, because I don't think you're going to find second-hand speakers that will give you what you want, for that money. Your Gales are good speakers.

For £500 (OK, over budget) you could get a second-hand Sugden A21a, one of the nicest amps ever made for under £2K. I'd recommend looking on the classified ad pages of Hifi Wigwam and Pink Fish Media.

:cheers:

speakers= to them there is no end ,can always expend biger and more and pay the arm and leg and more ;

but can susitute to headphones ,end up much better sound while much more cost effective

but in order them to spread thier wings its fullest potential ,will need a good source dynamic and fidelity ;

which devides into amp and dac ;

would love to hear whether one can share hims expirience with top end amp as ;

Bakoon HPA-21 amp how compares to OTL eddie current zana deux ?

or to fostex hp a8

Thanks for the replies folks

After 2 months of research and serendipitous fortune! This is where I am...

Rega rp1

Nad c350

Nad cd541i

B&W 602 s2 (on atacama stands)

Audioquest FLX-SLiP 4

Audioquest element interconnects

The sound I get is very good to my lugholes! Bassy spacious and quite detailed

However I have not had the rega hooked up to the c350 has the amp (e bay!)

Developed a fault of powering up AND not staying on! If I pre warm the amp with an hairdryer it works fine I am told

this indicates faulty caps, I took it in to Moorgate acoustics (sheffield) who after a week said they couldn't get the nad caps!

So off too sevenoaks (Sheffield) who are quoting £165 to change both caps!

I've been informed that the although the caps are branded Nad any caps of the correct rating will do the job

Not sure what to do, any thoughts?

Ps am currently playing the rp1 through my old Cambridge A1 mk3 + maplins

phono pre amp and it sounds way better than I expected

Cyrus 8vs2 and a pair of mission m71i's or, if you're lucky, a s/h pair of Usher S520's

Yes, any caps of the same value are fine. Any competent service centre should be able to both source and replace them.

As long as the voltage rating/capacity is the same (or slightly more), no problems will occur. They have to ascertain the size and mount. Obviously a NAD replacment would be easiest but no doubt also costlier and almost certainly no better than any other decent part from one of the big names.

Never heard of a component that needs to be warmed up with a hair drier first ...

regards
