Hi guys,

I'm very new to this forum and wanted some advice from you clever lot before I make a decision ASAP!

I am FINALLY buying a seperate system for myself and i've norrowed it down to the Marantz range. I want an amp, cd player and speakers (for the time being......gotta keep the wife happy somehow!) to start off with. So I'm mostly going to be listening to CD's, and I will plug up my laptop every now & again for things on my itunes/spotify. Even eventually buy another turntable.

I have got two options:
- Firstly I have been offered a Marantz PM6003 + CD6003 + Wharfedale 10.1 speakers (all used) for £290 [including speaker stands]

OR

- Brand new Marantz PM6004 + CD6004 for £400 [I will then need to buy some new speakers - mostly probably M Audio Bronze BX2 - and some speaker stands]

So my question is.... do I go for the used 6003 combo and be happy with that, leaving me money for plenty of music etc. Or do go for the 6004 series, but end up paying £600, double what the 6003 comes to.

Your thoughts would be fantastic!!

Thanks guys

Matt

Buy the 6003s and the 10.1s, no question. The improvements you get from the 6004s will be almost irrelevant, IMO, and the 10.1s are great speakers. That will leave you plenty of money for music, a turntable, or maybe a USB DAC for your laptop like the new DACMagic XS...

First option without a doubt - there is likely to be no more than a cigarette paper performance-wise between the two amp/cd combos - this is old technology.

Use some of the money to get an inexpensive DAC for the laptop.

Agree - I don't think you will notice much of a difference between the 6003 and 6004 - I would invest in a dac for the laptop though.

Go for the first system and then add an Airport Express for wireless streaming to your system. You then don't need to physically connect your laptop and can stream whilst still using it for web browsing or posting on this forum.

You can do this anyway with a computer no matter how you connect it, at least, certainly with a mac, OD.

My point being that the computer need not be tethered physically and on a rack or in the near vicinity of the hifi. One could instead, be reclining on the sofa, for example, and not have to worry about attached cables. It is of course possible to use an extra long USB cable, but it's not a very elegant solution.
