i seem to be listening to more and more music on headphones at the moment. i have a pair of senn hd595 which i bought for watching movies and a bit of gaming and i think they do a good job for both however when listening to music with below system i find them to be a bit bland. would this be the headphones or would a headphone amp bring the senns alive. iv noticed play have the grado 225 for £170 at the moment or would i be better of spending the money on an amp dont know how good the inbuilt one is in the pulse.

Hi

I would go for new headphones. I tried out quite a few headamps (rega, naim, lehman audio) and didn't think there was a big enough improvement over my cyrus 8vs's inbuilt headphone output to justify the outlay compared to spending the same amount on new headphones.

I gave the senn hd595s a try aswell and I think that AKG 701s or Grados would be an improvement.

I havent heard the headphone output in the pulse so don't know how good it is, if you can audition first it really is worthwhile.

I too would go for the headphones first. I found the Senns a bit bland and have Grado SR80s which do better dynamics and attack and various AKGs which do a huge midrange with lots of detail and realism.

Probably not a great deal. After reading a few posts by people who have tried different Grados, some people say there isn't a great difference between the sr80s up to rs2s. If you can try before you buy you might find that 60s or 80s would suit you aswell as 225s.
