I can't believe this.. having finally decided on the 37px80b due to the size and great price it seems to be out of stock at all places offering it for £500. I want to buy it in store to save waiting for delivery and needing to take a day off work so amazon at £545 is ruled out, Richer sounds at £530 with 5 year guarantee was a done deal but they are out of stock with no idea when (or if) they are getting any more from panasonic, now the best in store price I can find is £600 with no extended guarantee

My new dilema is that I can either buy it for £600, but the 40" sony 40v4000 is available for the same price and to make matters even worse the 42" pana 42px80 is on sale for £500.

I had originally ruled out the 42" as I will be sitting only 7.5-8 ft from the screen but at £500 I am wondering if that is really too close - does anyone sit this close to a 42" screen. I have v+ on order but we will likely still be watching a good bit of SD tele (the missus can't miss her eastenders!).

I like the sony and have seen it in action at a friends house but will this also be too big or will I appreciate the extra inches given it is the same price as the 37" pana?

Are there any other 37 or 40" TV's that should be on my shortlist for a viewing if I am spending max £600.

What would you guys go for to give a good SD picture at 7.5ft - I am thinking the 37px80 is the right choice but am reeling at paying the same as for a 40" and more than for a 42" - it just doesn't feel right, especially since the 42" pana is essentially the same TV in a bigger screen.

any thoughts appeciated, hopefully off out today to make the purchase and be done with it, this dilly dalying is getting on even my nerves, and probably all of yours that have read my numerous posts on the subject!

I wouldn't worry too much about size a 42" will probably be fine, i sit about the same distance as you 7.5ft & i have a 46".

Just go for it you will be pleased you did & enjoy the bigger screen.

Hi,

I deliberated on a 37" screen size before finally opting for the 42" I have. We sit anywhere from 4' - 12' from the screen depending who was first on the couch! SD viewing is not compromised much when sitting close but we watch usually through the SKYHD box. There is a difference when we switch between analogue and DVB on the Panasonic though with DVB being a marked improvement.

I've read reports of some regretting a 37" screen when they had the choice of going larger. I haven't read of someone changing the screen to downsize though. Get the 42" and enjoy it.

Cheers.

cheers guys.

42" it is and I even found a deal at dixons for the 42px80b £475 delivered!. Couldn't find any for £500 in store so have taken the internet deal, delivery is the 8th Jan... I know I won't be dissapointed and even if it slightly too big for my current flat we hope to move next year into somwehere bigger (if we can ever sell this place, but thats another story).

Now all I need to do is convince my fellow gamers that plasma is good for gaming and I won't be suffering from screen burn - they have already started with that chat and it's only just been ordered!

Coincendence V+ box arrives the 8th too, all is beginnning to fall into place. The immortal words of Hannibal Smith spring to mind.

I can just hear BA now calling me a crazy fool! The plan did come together but not when I thought it had.

Dixons cancelled my order and returned payment saying no stock so the plan certainly didn't come together. I did some surfing around and found the 37" available form comet for £500, so I went for the click and collect and picked it up yesterday.

I am glad I didn't get the 42 as the 37 feels just right in our viewing space, picture wise, virgin is good but I can't wait for my virgin HD. I must admit that at first I was dissapointed by the picture from my xbox as my componenent cable has not arrived from amazon yet and the scart feed looks worse on my new bigger screen than on my old 28" CRT but when I told a mate about this he came round with a spare Xbox 360 component cable and OMG what a world of difference, seriously anyone still gaming in SD needs to think about upgrading soon - it looks amazing, so crisp, so detailed.......... I love it!

So, I am happy with the new tele, and delighted with HD gaming, have an HD virgin box on its way and should be fairly content, but I'm not because now I have experienced first hand the difference HD can make on my xbox I am now planning to bin my dvd player and get a bluray - cue another year searching to get a good model at a buget price, just like I did for the TV. Will this never end!

TV is in situ now though so thanks to all for their advice, much appreciated.

I went through very similar just recently, was not sure whether to get the 42" or 37" Panny PX80. Was made harder by the fact that we already had a crappy SD 42" LG so the 37" was going to feel small, but then the 42" was just too big for our living room. Anyway, went for the 37" and couldnt be happier, pictures great and size looks great too now I have got used to it. Glad i didnt go for the 42" (despite all the 'bigger is always better' type responses you get on these forums!
