Please help! As some of you might be aware I'm very attached to my Trinitron Wega flat display which i've now had for approx 6 years. I'm very tempted at the moment however to take the plunge and buy a Bravia V4500 in the sales as there are some very good deals around. Is it really worth my while? I watch (and will continue to do so for some time) standard definition. My Trinitron is still producing wonderfully sharp, vivid pictures but i'm not sure on the lifespan of CRT - i've heard 8-10 years normal use is the standard. Another aspect of LCD tvs that concerns is the sound quality...i'm not too keen to buy extra speakers at the moment and the Trinitron (due to its depth!!) has an inbuilt bass unit. Some honest opinions would be much appreciated!

If you really have no interest in upgrading to HD either via Sky/Freesat or Blu ray at the moment then I'd stick with what you've got if it still provides an experience you are happy with. My Philips widescreen CRT lasted for 12 excellent years and I only replaced it with plasma when it went wrong about 8 months ago. It too had a built in sub and a couple of small surround speakers, and provided a sound quality far superior to any plasma/lcd I've heard. I nearly replaced it with an lcd about three years ago but was so glad I hadn't when I saw the huge improvements in the technology when I was finally forced to change it. Wait until you really need/want to replace and then choose the best of the current technology.

I've got a 40w4500 and am extremely happy with it. My parents have a (I think) sony 40s3000 and its rubbish. So you'll probably need a demo to be sure that you're happy it stacks up to a CRT (remember to stand well back - bigger screens amplify rubbish picture close up).

The quality of SD is really very good on my screen (my brother, a plasma man, was quite jealous over Christmas - his 3 year old LG plasma looks rubbish). The 46" w4500 is causing users some on-screen clouding problems, so check in advance what the retailer will do if a return is needed. Can't say about the sound tho, I'm using an a/v amp.

That said, if you really like what you have and don't want to get HD inputs, maybe best to wait and see what happens with OLED in 2009?

Thanks very much for your replies. I would be looking at a 32" screen so i'm not sure there would be much benefit to HD. I have quite a large DVD collection which I guess might benefit from an upscaling BD/DVD player. The Trinitron isn't showing any signs of giving up the ghost just yet so perhaps OLED might be the way to go! Hmmm decisions...decisions!
