My PHILIPS 32PF9641D/10 LCD TV is just one week out of warrenty and has developed a fault.

Basically, the screen occasionally goes black (every night, at least 2/3 times).
Sound can still be heard, it happens with the PS3 and Virgin Media box and can only be resolved by turning the the TV off/on.

Suppose Phillips wont be interested as its about 1 week out of its 12 month warrenty?:(

Where did you buy the TV from? Your first port of call should really be the retailer. It's always worth a try, and there's no harm in contacting the manufacturer either. But basically if they stand firm and say it's out of guarantee, and they won't do anything, then you can either sack it off and live with it/buy a new TV etc or, you can go down the sale of goods act route, which will probably entail you paying for an independant engineer to look at the TV. If they say it's a manufacturing fault, the retailer should then do something about it. If they don't, small claims court. If however the engineer reveals it to be misuse that cased the fault or whatever, then you're stuck.

Agree with alwatson - if you quote the sale of goods act at them, they might give in - even threaten to post on websites, etc, about the product developing a fault after a short period. However, I actually had a similar problem - I had a Philips 32" LCD and a V+ box, and every so often, I would switch it on, and the screen would be blank, but I could hear sound and I could even use the menus - it was just the picture I couldn't see. For a while I thought it was the V+ box - even called an engineer out.

But I eventually realised that turning the tv off and on again resolved the problem, and I usually checked the HDMI connections too, and cleaned them before turning the TV back on again. I'm not sure what happens to cause this, but try cleaning the connections, etc, and see if that helps.

Purchased from a local Currys, so they will be first point of call.

I have swapped the SCART lead for the Virgin Media Box into the 2nd socket, purchased a new quality HDMI and changed to another socket. Problem still exists.

I cannot see any menus on the screen but i know its trying to show them as the Ambilights change colour.

My first venture into LCD from CRT..... not impressed

I had a similar problem with an LG TV purchased from Curry's. The TV lost its picture; sound was ok when the TV was about a month outside the warranty period so;

First port of call was Curry's who said "you should have bought an extended warranty", and then "it will probably cost you around £350 to repair"; due to the rise in technology and fall in prices I could have bought the same model but new for another £100.

Next I contacted LG and asked them where their nearest repair centre was, they informed me they didn't have one and to take the TV back to where I bought if from.

I then took the TV to a local repair shop who after a week or so told me they couldn't get in to a certain area of the TV as you needed a "special tool".

The TV is now dead, the moral of the story buy from a retailer with good after sales service such as Audio Excellence etc (I previously had a fault with a my Denon DVD A1 and the manager returned the repaired equipment to me personally). I am now in the market for a new LCD TV, but I know where I won't be buying it from and it won't be an LG. After spending over £1000 on an electrical item you don't expect them to break down just over a year.

I know this won't help you at the moment but at least you are not alone.

I don't know if it's a problem with Philips TV's, because now that I think about it, I don't think I had the problem after I hooked the V+ box up through my Onkyo amp. Have you tried calling Philips directly - under the sale of goods act, something you buy should last for a reasonable amount of time. Obviously, reasonable is often a matter of opinion, but I think even Philips would agree that a £1000 TV shouldn't break down after a year!

Update...

Rang Currys, who were very good. Was told to contact Philips.

Contacted Philips who were also ok, explained the problem and it being out of warrenty by just 6 days, fault developed 3days out of warrenty. Was given a reference number and told to write, with a copy of proof of purchase, explaining problem/fault and that i would like it repairing under warrenty. Guy at Philips seemed to think i would get it repaired as agreed it was "just" out of warrenty period.
Sods law im away from home with work till the weekend.... anyone fancy writing me a letter to Philips?
