Hi all,

I'm moving house and have convinced the wife we need a bigger TV as our new living room is much larger so I'm looking at sets that are 40" and above.

I only have around £1,250 to spend so I can afford the two usual suspects i.e. the Pioneer 4280XD (gutted that I can't get the 428XD at £1300 because there's no stand with it and I don't want to wall mount the TV) and the Sony 40W3000. It'll be used with a Sky HD box and HD picture quality is most important to me but a good picture from my PS3 when gaming comes a close second.

I had talked myself into getting the 4280XD but the latest edtion of What Hi Fi has a feature on 1080p sets and under points against for the Sony it says - "Nothing".

I'm open to alternatives however so please help!!!

a bit of haggling should get you the 428xd depending where you go for it. the lower pioneer you mention is virtually the same set, less the auto light calibration ( turn it off anyway) and a pc input. i got the 428xd for £1,300 from Sevenoaks. either way, you will be pleased, especially if you have sky hd, or blu ray. by the way Mr Everard, i ended up getting those M&K tripole surounds at the weekend. did hear some bookshelf PMC's but partner would not have them on stands in our viewing room!! wonderfull sound though!!Excellent, can't wait for M&K's return! will spend the next three weeks watching films in dts-ma as off work! the joys of working for the Government!!

good luck with the tv mate, hope you dont mind me jumping on your thread

Sorry, that was misleading what I said about getting the 428xd for £1300.

What I mean't was that although I could get it for around £1300 I'd still be looking at another £100 for a stand.

So, the general consensus seems to be that the Pioneers in this price range are still the best buys regardless of the lack of full 1080p?

Yep. Unless you want to wait for the new Pannys. Still don't think they'll be as good as the Pio but they may close the gap significantly.

Being new will the new Panasonics be in the same sort of price range though and are they 37" panels because I'm really after a 40 or 42 inch panel?

Well I expect the Panasonic PZ80 range to comprise of 42 and 46 inch Full HD panels and the higher spec PZ85 sets will be 42 and 50 inch Full HD. Prices for the PZ80 range should be pretty close to those of the outgoing PZ70 range (£1000 for the 42 and about £1200 for the 46 inch model - this is yet to be confirmed though). The Pioneer is a great set and I join everyone in recommending it but it might be worth waiting a few more weeks just to see what the new Pannys are like.

42PZ80 is selling for £913 and 42PZ85 for £1080 on btshop / dabs.com

At that price for the 42PZ85 (and with it being a 1080p screen) I think it'd be sensible to see the reviews before committing to a TV and by the time I decide on one the price of the 428XD might have come down a bit. I'm not moving house until the 2nd of May so I'm as well holding off for a bit.

Thanks for the help guys.

I recently purchased the pioneer pdp428xd well impressed so far had it around three weeks now but i know i made the right decision on buying this plasma i did my homework about which is the better set plasma or lcd but with myself always viewing fast moving images such as the sport and watching lots of movies i was told that plasma was the winner and the pioneer with its reputation anyway was always the winner here and so far it ticks every box for me great picture/colours blacks are blacker etc also looks a solid tv alround the remote control being very well built of aluminium too well worth the money in my opinion long term.
