Is it worth spending / risking under £100 for a pair of Epos M12 speakers described as follows?

Epos M12 speaker enclosures

WESTRA XW-165-1394 woofers

Wharfedale 0318 tweeters

Monacor crossovers

Substantially upgraded internal wiring

Monacor terminals

Thanks for your advice.

Personally...... No.

They aren't really M12s are they, apart from the cabinets? Different drive units, modified crossover and wiring, different terminals..... Anything thats been put together so that it can be sold on at that price ain't going to touch the original Epos design. Money down the drain if you ask me.

I take your point on that score. The sceptic in me said "too good to be true", but I thought it wise to canvass other opinions before getting carried away - the mods mean nothing to my limited knowledge and could be, for all I know, a worthy mod. For less than £100 there's still a curiosity nibbling at me!

I suppose it depends whether you can afford to lose just under £100.

Who has done the mods? Where are you buying from? Is there a chance to hear them first? What sort of load will the modified speakers present to your amp?

The mods have been done by a chap who appears to be something of a hi-fi enthusiast. Apparently, he is building his own floorstanders incorporating same components to go with his Naim system. The M12 mods are now rated at 100W per channel. As he is based in Edinburgh it is not feasible to listen beforehand. They're on Fleabay, the seller has 100% feedback, and there's always a chance they're a bargain. Yes, I agree that we really should be at home to 'Mr. Sensible' on this one! And yet...

If you are that inquisitive, give it a go, but you really do need to buy them knowing full well that you could, in effect, lose the money. I doubt there'll be many people lining up to buy them off you if you decide they aren't any good.

I'll have a look at them now and come back with any further thoughts.

OK, so its £65 plus postage. If you can afford to lose that and are really interested, give them a try.

However, I notice he has also replaced the baffles and it doesn't look like the best job ever to me. They really aren't Epos speakers at all. The baffle is an integral part of the cabinet, so even the cabinet isn't original.

To all intents and purposes these are DIY home made and home designed speakers which happen to be built into part of an Epos cabinet.
