I've just been to Sevenoaks Hifi in Loughton (excellent service by the way) and listed to a mixed B&W system, with 684's at the front, HTM62 centre, ASW610 sub, and M1's (from the MT-30 system) for the rears. The AVR was the new Marantz SR6003. I know it seems odd but it sounded pretty good and it would allow me to wall mount the rears (I have cables that have been hidden in the coving). My room is 7.5m by 3.8m and I was wondering:

1. Do people think the system will "fill" the room? It sounded good and loud in the demo room but it's 1/2 the size of my room.

2. What do people think of mixing the 684's with the M-1? The system will be 50/50 music and movies, so I wanted some good speakers for music. I also listed to the MA RS6's which were also good.

3. There was some bass "boom" when listening to music, is this a trait of the 684's and will this get worse if they are placed in a corner of the room (I'm very limited on where I can put them)?

4. Has anyone been able to compare the Marantz Sr6003 against the Yamaha 863?

I'm thinking about going back for another listen, but I wondered if anyone could help me with some advice.

Thanks.

I run the 685s with the M1 rears and this also works very well so I'm not too surprised the 684s work the same. My living room is 20ft by 15ft approx (so that's what about 6.5m by 5m?!) and it goes way louder than I should have it (with plenty to spare), especially considering I live in a ground floor flat so you should have no issues filling the room.
I would have thought any bass boom would be accentuated by putting the speakers in a corner if it was the 684s at fault. However, are you sure it wasn't the sub turned up too loud? Worth checking by switching off the sub when you play music if you go back.

If your major consideration is movie go with Yamaha(superb movie performance), if your major consideration is music go with Marantz. But if you want both them, buy yamaha 663 and Roksan kandy.(best music and movie performance)

This kind of setup sounds good. Only the 684's are not in my interest. I suggest you to listen 683's, they are so much better in movie and music.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I tried the system with the sub on and off. I'll spend some more time trying out speaker locations when I go back.
