Mission reborn...

No, not just you Lambechop. We discovered very late in the day (after the cover had been printed) that the new Mission speakers wouldn't be available when the November issue went on sale this week, so we had to postpone the review.

It will now appear in our Awards issue, I believe, on sale from October 20th. Or if you want to get your Awards copy early, it will be on sale at the Manchester Sound & Vision Show during the weekend of October 17-18th!

As mentioned elsewhere on this matter, once Mission can confirm availability of the speakers, we'll run the review: that may mean it debuts online before being in mag.

It's rare this happens, but a lot can (and does) occur in the week between a cover being sent and the rest of the mag making its way to the printers

I just wish they'd start making 751's again. I look forward to the review.

Lambechop:I just wish they'd start making 751's again. I look forward to the review.

I've got an immaculate pair of darkwood 751's that have served me well. Been thinking about upgrading, more so because they are 15 years old, and I feel that they are the weakest link in my up to date(ish) system.

I have been looking around and a few people have asked my why am I bothering as the 751's were a great bit of kit.

I have posted before about changing speakesr and visited a few Manchester Hifi emporiums yesterday to get a feel. Lots of choice but it's difficult when they don't stock forum recommendations of Spendor or PMC. Dynaudio looked good though.Looks like I'll need to spend up to a big oner to get better than I have. I will wait to see what's on show at the Manchester show next month.

I'll take a look at the Missions, as I've enjoyed their company over the years. If my son takes more of an interest he may inherit. Alternative is to sell on Fleabay (do any dealers do part ex and would I get a fair price?) - an idea what they would go for, as I said grade A condition and working perfectly....

Pete, I too have a pair of grade A 751's that are tucked away. I'm using a pair of B&W CDM4 floorstanders in my system which are very good, well over six years old, if you like the 751 sound you will find B&W a close match (not my particular model). The 751 was the best speaker Mission made, you can still get replacement bass drivers but not the tweeter, worth investing in if you intend to keep them. If I were you I'd hold on to the 751's and consider updating your stands and cables, they improve the more you spend on them...

Agree with much of that, though I'd lean more towards the 752 based on current experience. The 751 is a superb speaker though and a terrific used buy if they're in good condition. They had a tremendous projection; really put the music out well and no flabby bass - a good deep standmount that'll withstand many an upgrade.

I've said a few times now, but the 75 series was arguably Mission's finest - 751, 752 and the 753 were superb examples of the craft I thought.

I believe that there rebirth may come a little late for me. I always knew that the M64i's that I had were the weakest link in my system, but I managed to get a too good to refuse deal on them (£140 new). However the other week I bought a pair of KEF C35's off of Ebay for £10 and they heart and soul blow the Mission's away... now I have had some B&W P4's come in that need a tweeter repair (meaning I have not heard them) but I am willing to bet that they will be better than the Mission's... so the M64i's will be sold this weekend...

I wish Mission well with the re-birth.

The P4 was a decent speaker if memory serves - circa £700-ish new I think? It should comfortably see off the Missions and the KEFs.

Have to say once we got beyond the 75 series, the 77 was the start of a steadily increasing steep and slippery slope for Mission and they weren't climbing it. Sad to watch as I had the 751 and now have, as you can see, the 752. The 753 really needs no introduction and good pairs are aplenty and most of the time I'd suggest you could buy those with confidence. They would give your P4s more than a run for their money and I think would outperform on a like for like basis.

Bear in mind, Peter Comeau has taken up a senior role with IAG and previously worked with Mission during the heyday, so hope springs eternal that this sleeping giant will awaken in style with this new range (or maybe the next one after).

John, when did you get the 782s? I'm trying to remember when that range appeared. I know there was the very well rated 780/780SE, but don't remember when it was out.

Good question I think they must have appeared around 2001 (give or take a year).

Nice speakers...my only real criticism is that they are fussy about positioning. but if you like accoustic stuff and vocals they're great.

They have quite a cosy sound, without being too warm.
