Mission 702 stand-mounts vs. Mission 773(e?)

Hi,

I've just bought a pair of Mission 773 floorstanders from a colleague (I _think_ they may actually be 773e's as they have two bass drivers) and have just connected them up and was pretty underwhelmed compared to my old faithful Mission 702 stand-mount speakers that I've had for years. I'm no audio buff but it was like night and day when listening to the same track on both sets of speakers. I bridged the two sets of connectors on the back of the 773's as I only have single cable right now (but of a reasonable quality) and they are hooked up to a Marantz PM6004 & CD6004.

From the wider wisdom here, was I wrong to expect that these bigger floorstanders would actually be better than my old 702's? I've always loved the sound of my 702's and that's probably why I've never replaced them before but the chance of trying these 773's for £30 from a work colleage was worth a punt.

I'd be really interested to hear what people think here about this. Are my 702's just 'better'? Should I just bi-wire the 773s into my Marantz PM6004 and will have a revelation compared to what I hear now?

I'm going to switch them back and forth for a week or so whilst I get some research done, and hopefully some insight here, but on first listen I reckon I'll be dumping the 773(e?)'s sooner rather than later.

The 773 are quality speakers that require more 'amp' than your Marantz pm6004.

The 702 being a better match.

That said the 702 are capable and will take better amplification. Not putting down the pm6004 but it is the weakest link in your system.

In gaining improvement the speakers are usually the least of your worries.

What was your mate driving them with?
