Do you think that the best value deal for a stereo set can be this:

Two floorstander loudspeakers

Integrated amplifier

CD player?

Or would you go for something else, like Cambridge Audio Minix Xi (amplifier with integrated DAC)?

I would not buy cheap floorstanders. Best value is used gear, you can get almost new stuff for about 50% of new price. Best value probably some sort of computer into active speakers. Or else look at Marantz?Denon all in one systems like Marantz 603.

What is your budget?

To answer the question directly:

Onkyo A-9010 Amp £200

Denon DCD720AE CD £150

Tannoy DC6T Speakers £250

If you have access to Richer sounds, there are a few deals available there.

For £900

Marantz PM6005

Marantz CD6005

Q Acoustics 2050i

You could have:

Denon DCD720AE CD £150

Behringer A500 amp £150

Then that would leave £500 for speakers, yes Richers have some deals on Tannoys

I would look out for some AVI 9RS for about £700 then add a cdp or use a tablet/computer to stream music. But not really low end though.

The onkyo A9030 is now being reduced to make way for the A9010, available from richer sounds for£130. There is a review by whf on this site, I think.

Assuming you want a CD player as your main source you can see from previous posts that it is possible for your budget. If you want to use computer / digital downloads. If your budget were to spread a bit then suggest the Wharfdale 230 floorstanders might be worth including along with Denon amps as previously mentioned and likewise Denon 720 CD player.

You can get better deals by buying second hard but unless you really have some sort of idea what you want / are likely to get this is not really a route I'd advise.

Floorstanding loudspeakers are not as good value as standmounts. They often have only a marginal increase in internal volume and an awful lot more wood and postage associated with them. If you want the very best value at the lower end of the market, look at out-of-favour AV receivers (you can get good ones for fifty quid on the 'bay) and good quality standmounts around the 200 quid mark (some of them are amazing - Wharfedale, Dali, Q). Pick your source from there.

EDIT - I had a Minx Xi and it's terrific, even with £1k+ speakers, but the choice of something like that will depend on how wedded you are to the idea of streaming over silver discs, obviously. I'd also suggest that Sonos gives a superior user experience and flexibility.
