Since subscribibg to the above I've seen some great movies I wouldn't normally have been drawn to - eg Stray Dog - Akira Kurosawa's 1949 film noir, the forerunner to all those rookie cop patrnered with veteran cop movies. Also Anatomy of a Murder - cracking courtroom drama with James Stewart, George C Scott and Lee Remick - class
 
I agree totally (and both the films you mention are great!).

And they're also great for documentaries, travelogues etc - the sort of DVDs you don't get in Blockbuster, and that you may not want to buy (if only because of the cost).
