oops senior moment there, try again.
does anyone thing that "looping" the ariel through a device such as a you view box or similar detracts from freeview PQ. I have tried loop through against a direct ariel feed into the tv and thing the direct feed produces a better picture. any thoughts?

No. Not with digital.
If passthrough degraded the signal, it would manifest itself as picture blocking/freezing and sound pops/cracks, or if it was bad enough no signal at all, not a difference in PQ.
