Maybe I overstated having people over. Certainly doesn't need anything like club levels.

You can't have club levels with domestic Hi-Fi. We are suggesting something to maintain composure in 5x5 room at above normal listening levels for hours.

In a 5 x 5m room full of people, more to the point. In these circumstances the power requirement is huge, far greater than anyone would think.

The difference between 'party' levels and decent hi-fi levels with a few friends is the issue, the latter is easy enough, Zensor 3s and a 80-120wpc amplifier will be fine. Vlads Roksan Kandy will do the job, as will many others.

You just wanted a little hifi and now you need a Pink Floyd line array system. Who ever said forums are boring :)

I really don't feel comfortable recomending a pair of £300 standmounts in this case. Better have small form factor floorstanders I reckon. MA and CA floorstanders are cheap as dirt these days.

NAD 3020D is too weak to push the 685s2's, which are 87dB sensitive (probably measure 84dB efficiency). Best to go with a bigger amp, why not a Rotel to match. B&W + Rotel is a very popular combo.

Do you think the b&w 685 s2's would do the trick? Perhaps coupled with the NAD?

it will do fine, providing you like the sound and do not expect it to go very loud.

No wifi or bt in the Arcam A19 unfortunately.

Never heard that Yamaha or the Dalis.

hi

try Q Acoustics Concept 40 (or 20 if you want standmounts) + Quad Veena.

Cambridge Audio Minx XI also seems to be getting good reviews as well, maybe try pairing that with some sensitive speakers.

Or, if you suddenly find you have a bigger budget then anticipated, there's always Naim Unitiqute 2 + Kef LS50 or Neat Iotas.

Quad could be good for sure. Hopefully some reviews come out. I like the idea of the concept 20's but they do look ugly on their stands. Cheers :)

U reckon the quad would go nicely with b&w 685 s2?

I don't know, I haven't heard da Quad, but you should make a shortlist and then demo everything on it, and let your ears decide, not reviews. The 685 s2 might sound just fine with it, but you should demo. Dali Zensor 3 might also be a good fit, but try to audition the Q Acoustics as well (floorstanders if you got the room for them).

Also, the Unitiqute 2 comment means that it will make MP3s... well no, it won't "make" them, it will show what mp3s really sound like - meaning like carp. But the Quad is closer to your budget.

actually, what I would do if i were in your shoes, I would just make a shortlist with 3 or 4 combinations of what has been suggested already (including the AVIs, who a lot of people seem to praise) and then try find one or two dealers that has everything or most of it, and demo.

And also, if you find you establish a good relationship with a certain salesperson who seems to understand your tastes and speak the same "language", then explain what you are looking for and let them make suggestions as well. Who knows, maybe you'll gell with something that hasn't been suggested. Then follow your ears and be happy. And try get a home demo if you can.
