Logos and Banners

Just a few years back we were all encouraged to sign a petition asking for the TV stations to refrain from using station ident logos and I wonder what happened to the campaign?

I was watching football on BBC HD last night (until I could no longer put up with the hysterical gabbling from the commentator's assistant) and of course I was treated to a huge banner announcing that I was watching BBC plus the score and the time.

I couldn't help thinking that it was such a pity that the very fair picture was bedecked with this poorly placed distraction - particularly when Villa took a corner which was partially obscured by it!

Is this just another case of Auntie BBC knowing what's best for us, or is there a chance that if enough of us complain we might persuade them to change the policy? Not just to the football broadcasts but tennis and other sports.

Perhaps I'm being super fussy.......................?

Curious, the BBC's HD DOG is one of the subtler ones, sometimes it's barely visible at all. Presumably you're not actually complaining about the score and time being shown on the screen? That's rather common for football...

While I understand that TV channels use DOGs for both legal and profile reasons, I can't help thinking that they should take a closer look at the way our American cousins do it.

I watch a great deal of American TV and whenever the ads and bumpers are finished, the show segment begins with a full colour DOG which, after a few seconds is reduced to an almost see-through watermark.
Much better and it doesn't obscure any picture content or create screen burn.

On the subject of TV channels, here in Scandinavia it is now possible to pick and choose the exact channels that one wants in your digital package, instead of having to choose "blocks" of channels that only contain a few that are of interest.

Seems like a good idea to me . . . .

Thank you guys, for your input. I have to say I'm a little surprised that these logos et al. are regarded as acceptable - Yesterday afternoon watching ITV (football again!) I was treated to a banner on the left announcing it was ITV sport, and a logo on the right saying it was ITV HD. A bit of overkill there, I think.

So, in answer to your question, the_lhc: yes, that darned great score banner does offend me, and the thought that it could be damaging my screen doesn't help.

However, I do realise that I might be the only guy on the forum that thinks that way! Our petition didn't seem to work..........

Tonya, thanks, I spend as much time as I can in the States and have noticed the difference in the way station logos are treated. I recall watching the Masters Golf last year and the screen was completely clear of distractions - just a glorious HD picture. To be fair, one can't often say that.

Happy Days

I don't think anyone's said they think they're acceptable, I merely questioned your view of the BBCHD one. It's one of the better ones, very translucent and against a light background, all but invisible. They're annoying undoubtedly but I don't think they're going anywhere.

It's extremely unlikely to be damaging your screen in any way, unless you have a very old plasma and the idea of watching sport without having the basics, such as the score and the time on the screen is something I find quite bizarre, I'd hate that.

I did notice within a few days of launch that the MGMHD DOG (something that I complained about on here at the time) had been shrunk considerably, it's about half the size that it was, which, when you look at the size of it now, is quite alarming to consider.

Apart from when they annoyingly cover part of the screen with the Player's name and his score. The fiends, what do they think they're playing at, giving us useful information like that?!!! I'll be writing to the Daily Mail about this...

Heisan . . . .

Cheer up Nads, at least your country has the world's fastest internet connection!
Take a look at this Swedish newspaper report (don't panic everyone, it's in English!)
I thought MY fibre was fast, but this 75 year old woman has got 40 Gigabits per second.

That's the equivalent of downloading 30 uncompressed DVD films per minute (not allowed by the way).

Some channels are worse than others with IMHO kids channels being the worst offenders, just look how big and prominant the DOG is on any Disney channel!!

But the score banner on a game of football is IMHO a must and does not cause any risk of damage to your screen even if it is a older plasma, I have a Panasonic 42" series 5 with no built in burn protection and have been viewing logl riden TV for years on it and not a hint of any retension.
