listening on headphones and speakers at the same time?

Hello - hope someone can help me out. We're looking for a home cinema system that will allow us to listen via headphones and speakers at the same time (my partner has hearing problems and finds headphones help). Trouble is, the ones we've looked at seem to cut off the sound to the speakers as soon as the headphone jack is inserted. I've been told that a separate headphone amp would be one solution but we'd rather find a system that does the job out of the box, if possible (can't believe it's such an unusual requirement...) Does anyone know of any makes (or models) that allow sound out of both headphones and speakers?

Hi there.

I guess it is a slightly unusual requirement but a very valid one at that.

I don't think there will be any system that will aloow this accept if it faulty. Otherwise it would negate the whole reason for having a headphone output.

A headphone amp would only need to be small and with a long enough cable coming from the back of the main amp, your partner will have full control of the volume. There should be a pair of preouts on you current amp that you would connect the headphone pre amp to.

I'm sure you know this but you will want to make sure the headphones are a very good quality as poor quality will likely cause your partner to turn the volume up to try and hear detail better thus doing more damage to their hearing. Also noise canciling headphones migt be better too to cut out the outside world, even though you will be listening to the same music.

I hope that helps

Perhaps a headphone amp is the way to go....will look into it more closely. I guess it will give us more cinema systems to choose from. Good point about the headphones (he's got Sennheisers, they're pretty good, I think). Thanks very much for taking the time to reply :)

You are welcome. Let us know how you get on and what you decide to get.
