I can't see a problem with older cables as long as they're not kinked or damaged or anything.
I work with phone cables all day (much, much thinner than the majority of speakers cables), many of them decades old and the only times they tend to need replacing is when they're cut or crushed.

No maintenance other than avoiding obvious damage or damp. I have cables around 15 to 20 years old, and know of some more like 30. If you don't have terminations ( like banana plugs) then you should restrip and remake the ends every few years.
