Led Zeppelin Remaster - any good?

In a word, YES, I think they are quite good - still managed to retain the dynamics without, in my view, having maxed all the sliders out and messed around too much with EQ. But what do others think?

I`ve not heard them for some years but remember them sounding good and at that price well worth a punt.

Yep, not bad, but the originals (i.e. the first edition discs) mastered by Barry Diament are superb. I've got the first three albums and Presence and wouldn't swap them over in a hurry.

Got them all apart from in through the outdoor. Excellent music and they have been remastered well. They soung good!

Check out the bass playing on Lemon Song for a great hifi tester....

I prefer the original as it has a live feel to the recording. The new set has some cool paning effect and louder but very hifi to my ears.

Sorry about hi-jacking the thread !

I have just bought a stereo set up after many years of making do with an AV sound for Hifi. I am interested in buying some decent discs of Led Zep.

Looking on the net, it strongly points to discs from Japan (can't afford SHM !) or the 1st press editions. Is any disc from Japan good or are there goods one and bad ones ?

Have tried to find Barry Diament ones but that is proving a tad difficult.

Is there a decent CD of Dark side of the Moon also that I should look out for ?

For Dark Side of the Moon, the 30th Anniversary Edition remaster is excellent! Certainly on LP the drums are very sharp and the talking in the background is no longer a mumble -- the SACD / CD Hybrid is equally good.

I only have a normal CD (not SACD) , so would this Edition sound better over other discs available ?

I believe the 30th Anniversary DSOTM does not come as a standard CD, only as Hybrid SACD, it is definitely the best verison I have heard. Your CD Player should play the CD version on it fine.

If the current copy you have is 'CD only' then I'm pretty sure that is not the 30th Anniversary remaster.

The remasters all carry the "Digitally remastered by Jimmy Page and George Marino" and a slightly different spine lettering on the CD case - the originals are all issued with a bold typeface down the spines as well as different artwork to the rear.

Do you mean you only have a normal cd player rather than a normal cd copy of `Dark Side...`?

Don`t worry about not having a SACD player. The 30th anniversary edition will play on a CD or SACD player and is the one to get. Very expensive when first released, you can now pick this up for under £7 from both HMV online and Amazon. Enjoy the remastered cd sound for now and if you happen to get a SACD player in the future then all well and good. With any luck they will release some of Floyd`s other titles in the same format.

Normal CD player and the disc I have is 1994, so nothing fancy !

I will give the 30th one a go.

Thanks for the advise !

Sorry to the OP for continuing to hijack the Thread, but Rpsgc, give us your opinion once you've played the 30th edition - it's always nice to hear what other people think.

Going back to the Led Zep remasters, what are the differences in sound between the original CDs and the various remasters - is it just a live sound vs a hifi sound ? Are both valid, i.e. you may prefer one for some aspects and the other for others?
