Kuro monitor vs. long wait for 5090/6090

I've enquired here previously and had settled on going for a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 or the 6090. THe problem is, I'm in Australia and in all their wisdom, Pioneer will apparently not have them available here until February 09 - really. They have however, made the KRP600M monitor available here right now. Given that I have a twin-HD Panasonic tuner/recorder/bluRay unit, I'm seriously considering the monitor - I've heard the calibration and picture may be marginally better than the integrated models anyway. What does everyone else think? Going to be a loooonnnggg wait til' February otherwise. For those in support, I have a Denon AVR4306 (soon to be upgraded too - to HDMI1.3 / HD-audio capable model), is it worth coughing up for Pio's media receiver - I've been told that as I have a HD tuner already, I don't need it.

I would probably go for the monitor. If you don't need the integrated features of a TV, why bother, and yes you're probably right in that the monitor is aimed at more 'professional' display purposes, and thus more calibration and 'tweaking' functions than even the standard Kuro TVs, if that's a good thing !

It's a shame they don't do anything smaller than 60" and actually I'm surprised monitors don't feature more widely in manufacturers line ups, especially these days where the majority of TV feeds come via a separate cable box anyway and the increasing popularity of separate surround speaker packages in the home - I've never heard the sound from my TV's speakers from the day I bought it !

I run an office of high spec computer monitors (costing far, far more than same size size TV screens) for graphic design and retouching purposes. They don't have bult in speakers and tuners etc - why would they ?!

For my TV, I would be more than happy to do away with the speaker grilles, have a nice simple frame on the wall, that is a high spec panel doing the sole purpose it is intended for, showing pictures. In theory, it should cost less too !

Thanks mate - thats what I figured. I dont think its on their website yet, but apparently they do do a 50" version - I'm off to the store to check out the 60 this afternoon & will report back on it. I'm sitting 3-4m back and having seen the 60" in last years' Kuro I am VERY tempted. The monitor version are cheaper than the integrated sets and my dealer who I've bought a fair bit of gear has quoted me a VERY attractive price for both the 50 and 60.

We too run various monitors - we're in graphic & web design so I tend to agree with you - I have a nice set of Mordaunt Shorts sitting either side of my 2x23" Apple displays. And for sure, the 30" Apple Display my Wife runs, wasn't cheap and has no speakers etc.

Will let you know how the 60" turns out when I've seen it.

Sweet, sounds like a nice setup. I was blown away by the KRP-600M and bought it - delivery next week hopefully. Just got to work out what I'm going to sit it on now!

I wish I had the space....and er, the dosh ! Though I'm really not sure that even the Kuro's scaler could make Thai TV signal look good...

I think the monitor is a good idea. I think whether or not you need the Pioneer media receiver depends somewhat on what receiver you've got your eye on to replace your Denon.

Hey Fuzzy, I originally got confused and thought the media receiver was essential though now realise its more or less just an additional connection box. I'll be replacing my 4306 with either the 4308 or if funds allow the AVC-A1HD (to have the HD-audio decoding and HDMI1.3) so no problems there. Having seen it yesterday when looking at the tv, I may even check out the Pioneer beast for good measure. I was going to get the 50", but the dealer I've bought a lot of kit from before offered me a price on the 60" I couldnt refuse so.

@SC - where are you in Thailand? We were in Krabi in May for our anniversary. Beautiful place.

We went to Krabi 2 years ago, did kayaking with monkeys as hitchikers. Fantastic.

Living in Bangkok Damien....A city that will slowly turn the most sane man completley mad !

I haven't been south for ages actually. After years and years of travelling round the region for both work and holidays, now that I live here, I hardly do, certainly within Thailand, which is slightly ironic.

HiFi runs down to Singapore are my 'Krabi' of late !

Excellent - those are classic pics Rob - I've got some of my Wife with about 3 of them on her head, lol cheeky buggers.

I met a few Brits living in Krabi when we were there - we went out diving and had a divemaster from Shipley - lol and the underater video guy was from London I think. There's definitely worse places to be- we loved Bangkok but I guess we were only there for a couple days - different living somewhere. We live in Brisbane which is great for sure. Gonna put another post about my receiver up - appreciate your input.

Bangkok is fascinating to start with but after a short time we didn't really like it at all, I think it's an acquired taste. Some sights were amazing but I couldn't deal with the constant hassle from people trying to flog me stuff and the oppresive heat.

Worth experiencing but I'd only change flights there again.

Oh and another thing, coz I'm a muppet we missed the flight home and decided to go to Phuket to somehow get home. Thats one place I wont be going again, it's really sad if that's most people's experience of what Thailand is about.

Sorry for the off topic.

It could have been far worse than Phuket, believe me - try Pattaya.

As for Thai's trying to flog you stuff, I can only guess you were in the Oxford st/Covent Garden of Bangkok, and so, fair game ! Actually, thinking about it, Oxford street is worse, and I don't speak any Russian !
