hi all

after waiting since the end of jan for a flatscreen i finally got my new panasonic th42pz85 last week from john lewis, having read a few other posts from other people i thought id stick my thoughts in aswell!

1. i can really reccommend john lewis. i wanted to buy from them for the 5 year warranty (bad experience with car engine blowing up in the past - i like a decent warranty!). After not holding the pz70 i originally ordered until they said they would, and then selling it, i decided to wait for the pz85, and with the order for this they totally redeemed themselves! I got mine from the sheffield branch and the girl amanda that i dealt with was very knowledgeable and friendly and she kept me up to date with the order while they were waiting for stock of this tv to arrive. the day before the delivery they called to tell me i was third on the list and would be there around 10.30am. at 10.00am the delivery guys turned up and carried the tv down to my flat. 10 mins to build the stand and hook it up and im up and running!!! 5 stars to john lewis!

2. im really pleased with the tv. the freeview tuner seems as good as sky+ hooked up to it. as other people have commented it depends on the channel as to what the picture is like, for example bbc1, sky 1, channel four are really good pictures, other channels like uk gold with older programmes are not so good, but then they arnt so good with the crt either!

3. the tv really shines when hooked up to a decent source.

xbox 360 is amazing - gaming is so much better on big screen!

i bought a toshiba ep30 with 3 hddvd for £50 from ebay until i can afford blueray, i bought it mainly as a cheap upscaler, but have since managed to buy a few hddvds from ebay for less than id pay to rent a dvd from blockbuster!

pictures both upscaled from dvd and the hddvd are absolutely stunning. planet earth on dvd is superb. transformers on hddvd takes it to a new level for me absolutely no judder at all with 24fps, silky smooth, super crisp edges.

my only problem is that i had the audio outputs from the ep30 hooked up to my stereo amp for beefier sound but it was out of sync with the picture, so unhooked it and im just sticking to the tv for sound at the moment, i probably really need to get surround sound next..........

i have used the thx set up but it seems the contrast ends up quite high with this, can anyone reccomend another good set up dvd to use? whathifi team would you be able to scribble down and post the best settings you find when you review the tv?

im not an expert reviewer by any means but im really really pleased with the tv so far so thought id let everyone know what i think of it!

The pricematch is UK wide for English stores (different in Scotland). You have 28 days after purchase to do a pricematch. I would wait and see if prices drop any further and do a pricematch after 21 days. Just ring up the store you got it from and give them the details of the shop you want matching.

Check out "John Lewis Pricematch" in google for dedicated JL forums.

So will they price match the Panny to a lower priced one with a 1 year warranty, even though they have sold it with a 5 year warranty?

Nope you still get the free 5 year warranty if you price match (so I'm told).

Yes, JL ignore the warranty offered by the other shop. They do the pricematch and then throw in a free 5 year guarantee.

I phoned my local (Bristol) John Lewis yesterday and price matched Sound & Vision Bolton.
The Sound & Vision price included a 1 year warranty.

John Lewis rang me back today (24 hrs later) and matched the Sound & Vision price as well as including the John Lewis 5 year warranty and free delivery.

Is there a better deal/service to be had?

Dixons.co.uk is offering the panny TH-42PZ85 for £1075.99, enter the discount code 'bigtv' to get 5% discount taking it to £1022.19!..... Certainly worth a try to see if JL will match it.

I'm afraid I don't think they'll match Dixons, primarily as they only match other bricks 'n' mortar outlets.

Also, they don't usually allow for dicount codes and the like, even with other high st. stores, as the stipulation is usually that it has to be a "shelf edge" price, clearly displayed, for an in-stock item.

One other thing, although JL deliver free, if the competitor has a delivery charge, that gets factored in to the matched price.

I can't recommend JL highly enough though. I try to buy everything I can from them, after the fantastic service I received when buying my TV.

I am currently waiting on a reply from jl in bluewater, kent on a price match with boltons sound and vision. If all goes well it is indeed a saving of £200 plus the 5yr warranty. And i can confirm everything said earlier about dixons is accurate as i already tried that as a price match and it was denied. Yes it would save another £50 or so getting it from Dixons online but you`ll only get a year warranty. Come on JL, get your finger out with my pricematch reply and make me a happy chappy lol !. Will let you know the outcome soon....

Oh and yes, darkside, if you phone any "dixons" high street number you`ll actually be phoning currys. Their price for this set is considerably higher than £1075 but cant remember how much the guy said and it wasn`t in stock!.

Yes darkside they matched £1055 with free delivery. Motion blur was mentioned by another forum user here under panasonic th42pz85 heading. just read an alternative review also that mentions the ifc or ifs feature can cause more issues than it solves. it can be turned off though. How does your set perform with standard sky programmes if you have it ?

On a demonstration in a shop, motion blur occurred during a freeview broadcast of football on ITV1. The ball looked more like a comet! The other freeview channels looked OK but their content was not very challenging i. e. no real action.

If you intend to watch SD as your main source you need only be concerned if you watch much sport. However, I must point out that I do not know if the intelligent frame feature was switched on or not.

In the HDTVtest review comments, Vincent says that turning off IFC stopped the problems he was seeing with football.

I have the 37PX80 and I dont see any "motion tearing" as the ball passes the crowds. Watching Arsenal ping the ball about between each other is also fine.

When the ball is booted upfield, I see a an initial little blurring of the ball for the first couple of feet, but as the camera pans up and over the crowds it is perfectly fine. (the PX80 doesnt have IFC)
