Is True HD sound that much better?

I am thinking of upgrading my Amp/Receiver but need to know is True HD sound much better? is it something i will be able to tell the difference with straight away or is it more a gimmick for sales purposes?

Also is True HD sound available via SKY HD/Apple TV etc or is it just for blu-ray discs?

HD audio is not just Dolby True HD, there is also DTS HD Master Audio and PCM. The latter two are the best. The difference in sound from normal DD and DTD is obvious. A film on BD (no, Sky HD cannot give HD audio) with a PCM soundtrack like Spiderman 3 is stunning. For me it's more noticeable than the picture.

The bit rates are far higher. It is much better.
