OK, you know there is a DAC that goes between your computer and your Amp to make the sound from your computer sound better? Yes? And you know there is an device you can put between you Amp and your Headphones to make your headphones sound better? Yes? Well is there a device which has standard Phono sockets in and out that I can put between my Humax F2-FoxT digy box to improve the TV sound from it going to my Rega Brio 3. We like watching concerts and such like off the tele, but watching Glastonbury and T in the park last week was a flat experience. The sound from the Humax is not exactly bad but it sounded cold, a little flat and a little clinical. In fact it was flatter than a really flat, flat thing. Anyone know if there is a device to improve such matters?

The sound is created from the tv broadcast!. No bit of kits going to do owt with it, the only bits of kits are amps.

If the humax has digital out you could come out with digital cable - seperate DAC - rega. May improve sound a bit, as its the humax thats sorting the sound out at the moment..

Hi,

Im not sure whether such a device as you describe actually exists (I recall some Ipod amplifier devices work on a similar principle of amplifying the headphone output), but I can see an obvious flaw in it without having to even see it. The problem with the phono outs on your box is that they have already been passed thru the DAC within the box itself, thereby most likely losing a lot of detail etc. Any device which connects to the phonos and outputs on another set of phonos may change the sound (with amplification and possibly equalisation) but it cannot add detail and information lost within the cheap DAC within the box.

I would hope (and correct me if I am wrong) that the Humax has an optical or SPDIF coaxial digital output on the back (toslink). if this is the case then you simply need a decent DAC (Beresford and Cambridge spring to mind) connected to the digital output of your box, which will then provide you with much higher quality digital to analogue conversion and thereby much better sound quality to your amp and speakers.

I dont know much about the tuner box in question but I know from experience that even poor quality boradcasts (think Iplayer radio from PS3) sound excellent thru my Cambridge DAC, so it would be the same scenario with your box.

Have a look at what outputs your box has. If it does have a Digital output your laughing!

Dan

Yes? ......

No, what is it? I am intrigued..

Regarding your original question, it is right that if the source is poor there is little you can do. Computers can be a very good source for storing your music, but are poor to access it. That is why a DAC and amp are recommended over just plugging your headphones straight into them.

The audio quality from Glastonbury was pretty poor this year, in particular Muse was very flat.

Seeing as the source is at fault there is not a lot you can do, unless you have a graphic equaliser to hand.

Seems to be " garbage in = garbage out" is appropriate here..............
