Is retirement the only option?

I have a much loved Yamaha A1000 which has been the centre of my Prologic system for more years than I care to remember. When my old CRT TV died I upgraded to a plasma and bought my son a PS3. I still have my SVHS Panasonic and a new EX78 DVD/HD recorder. I can no longer use the yammy as a video switching unit (it has never heard about HDMI nor even optical). Worst of all I have to listen to Blu-ray movies through the TV speakers.

I've toyed with the idea of buying a cheap processor to take the sources and pass the audio (at least) to the amp - but they are not that easy to find unless you have high end kit and then they are not cheap.

Should I simply bite the bullet and get a new yammy (lots of good write-up's at the mo') and if so any good ideas what best to do with the old one (which can't be worth much to anyone else)?

Some time ago I had the amp upgraded to 5.1 discrete by a company called Videotec but sadly they no longer do this kind of work. Why can't old amps be upgraded or future-proofed (apart from it not being in the manufacturers' interests)?

All advice gratefully received.

I presume you mean retirement of the A1000 and not yourself.

Maybe not retirement, but probably semi-retirement in another room.

With the price of receivers with HDMI swiching and all the trimmings so low now, What is your budget?

I think a new amp, such as the Award-winning Yamaha, is the way to go after all this time. If you've only had Pro-Logic and Blu-ray sound through to TV until now, I think you might be in for a very pleasant shock.

Yes A1000 although the latter would be more welcome!

The price of 863 would not be out of the question but i've also got my eye on FreeSat.

Kind of waht I was expecting Andrew.

I hope to get the full flavour at the show tomorrow.

Thanks.
