Is OLED burn-in a problem? We want your input on one of TV’s hottest topics

I have an LG OLED77C8, bought in 2017, which now sports a burn in of the red part of the YouTube logo. It's weird because it's the only thing that's burnt in and it's not on screen that often.
I've had cricket on for days on end and there's nothing.

Got very bad burn in on a 55" CX when Richer Sounds said it would never happen. Now getting the same on a 55" C3 . Richer Sounds said it would not happen on this one . There is no gaming done on these . Got a 65" E9 gaming done on this one and fingers crossed no problems.

If this is still an issue, manufacturers need to address it, mitigating the causes on new units, and potentially offering repair or replacement.

If it's not an issue, the fact needs to be corrected by reputable sources.

You have to pay £200 extra at John Lewis for screen burn cover and I think they are the only shop that cover screen burn. Richer Sounds will help you out if you speak to the guy from Richer Sounds that watches the forums.

My curvy LG OLED556V after 5 years developed noticeable burn in from frequent BBC news viewing on the red elements.

Had a Currys care plan. It was replaced with a C2 without any issue from them. Glad I paid into the plan now.

I had an LG E7 which developed burnin after about 3 years. Along the bottom you could see the GMTV logo and Sky news logo together with the yellow Sky News ticker bar. The TV was heavily used but not for watching GMTV or Sky news. I managed to get LG to replace the panel for a fee and then sold the TV on a popular auction website. I told the purchaser the above and he told me he was buying the TV as a 2nd set and he already had another identical one with no issues. I guess it depends on what you've watched, but for me I would never buy another screen based on organic technology that over time can deteriorate.

Got a LG C1 over 2 years ago, and no problems whatsoever. BUT, I do have the screensaver on, and in the settings there is an auto-clean which runs every 3 months or so - I make sure this is enabled.

Just common sense really.

Hi there,

I was sorry to read about the problems you have had with your two LG televisions. Obviously as we can see from the mixed feedback on this thread, 'screen burn' can occur on OLED technology as the manufacturers warn, but there are variables and it doesn't affect all users.

If you could drop me a line with your details I'd be happy to investigate your cases specifically to get to the bottom of the repeated problems you have had, and see what can be done to help you.

Same has happened to mine and on the current second panel. The first panel went faulty with half the panel having a grey cast.

It is neither a massive problem nor an urban myth. It is simply something to learn, file, and enjoy the nice images.

I've used OLED screens on my TVs, and mostly on phones, probably since it's been available, and have not had a single problem, fortunately. I learned early on that I should not leave a screen on with a set image for an extended time. White digits and notification icons on always-on phone screens have not been a problem. I've had Sony and Samsung TVs, and Microsoft and Samsung phones.

Qualification: I probably watch less TV and am less phone-centric than most.

I've had my Sony A80J for 3 years, and I have not seen any signs of burn in, I also had 3 plasma TVS and didn't have burn on any of them either

We have an LG 55G1, LG 55C2 & more recently, an LG65C3. All but the G1 are left plugged in so do nightly screen maintenance when switch off for the night. None show signs of burn in.

So I think I have some insight on this! I use a LG C3 48 inch as my PC monitor. I am on it at least 10 hours a day. Everything from graphics design to gaming and movies. I can say I have no burn in that's noticeable. I previously had the LG CX 48 inch OLED that went to my 11 year old son and now its his monitor. Again no burn in after 4 years of abuse. The only precaution we take is auto hiding the taskbar and a rotating background. Same goes for my wifes 42 inch LG C3.

My current TV is an LED, which was Sony's top LED when I bought it - I didn't want to go OLED as I didn't want to potentially encounter screen burn. My next TV, which will also be a Sony, won't be an OLED either. I'll be moving on to MiniLED.

Don't have a OLED TV, but my Asus laptop with the OLED screen did give me burn in issue once and it fixed itself.

It happened because my gaming laptop's fan was blowing heat to a part of the screen where the picture wasn't changing. It was car racing game that I was playing and the part that was getting heated was the exact place where game would display the speedometer, so same picture for long time plus heat.

From that day I have disabled the speedometer in the game and everything is fine now. I guess same is with TVs burning is an issue that gets escalated with repeated picture and heat.
