Is it worth it?

Thinking about trying to 'up' the SQ on the DVD player. Only have a cheapo Sony DVD-R, and thus has limited inputs (1 single coax and basic phono inputs).

Would it be worthwhile getting hold of a Arcam rDac and rigging it to the amp? I will at some pointt be replacing the old dinosaur for a Blu-ray jobby, although this is some way off.

Apologies all: Pretty sure I've asked this question before, but since the site revamp can't locate the thread/post.

Hi, I am about to get a dac for main system and will also be putting my video through it.

I currently just have the analogue outs going into the amp and it isn't thrilling to be honest, the amp and speakers do their best but the source is a bit ropey.

Will let you know once I have tried it out, may give you som help.

Mind you I forgot have tv in my bedroom going through a dac magic and there was a good improvement over the tv going straight into the amp and the signal must be quicker because I don't notice any sync issues as I do on my main system. I also use the dacmagic for laptop playback through my arcam and they seem quite happy together.

Sorry about that, brain not working so I would say yes, how much better is subjective but dacmagic was £100 and i regard it as a good purchase.

If you can get a s/hand one cheap may just do the job and another bit of Arcam !

Cheers Shanks. Had the DacMagic and wasn't that impressed. Also home dem'd the Rega Dac, which was good is some respects but didn't really 'do it' for me.

I've seen a few rDacs recently bargain prices, maybe worth a punt.

Your advice sometimes is absolutely priceless. Not.

But it does keep ramming the name and location of his business in front of forum users, which appears to be the intention.

When was this? Nobody on this forum knows my company name. Are you from planet earth?

He was referring to Rick's business not yours.

Would be nice for him to make it clearer, as both quotes are used.

Misconstrude. Apologies to Tinky...

I'm caught between the devil... on this one. Really want a Marantz/Cambridge but given I only have a budget LED TV, this maybe a gross overkill. However, as always with me SQ is boss, hence why I was thinking Dacs initially -- it'll give me more flexibility as well, should I need to use that option later down the line.

What kind of Bluray will you buy PP?

No sure. Quite like Marantz or even Cambridge (I've always been cautious of Cambridge, but since buying the PMCs)... really don't know until I'm ready to dem.

Ok. If you are aiming for a £500 bluray why spending money on a DAC, even for just a few months...

Save the money and get the best bluray you can get for sure it will play CDs nicely.

The Oppo is well known for is music habilities, just a thought.

I'm hoping to pop down to Richer Sounds later today and look at some Blu-ray players. Unlikely to go with the Marantz now, having pretty much decided that it'll be an overkill with a budget TV. Hoping the newer budget offerings will give better SQ than my old DVD-R, which is starting to have problems reading discs.
