after consideration of veiwing distances I now decide I need a 42 screen. from this and other forums some opinions are that 1080p is useless under 46 so should i shell out for it? was thinking of the panny th42pz 80 for under £1000 but the px can be had for under £600 will want to watch a mix of bd,dvd, skyhd and all the sd stuff so at 42 is it worth the extra if there is little or no difference.

Certainly I'd say it's hard to tell the difference with 1080p on screens of 32in or less, with 42in it's worthwhile if you're investing in Blu-ray so yes, I'd say it's worth going for the 1080p model.

I've seen the 42PZ80 from as little as £720. You might find it even cheaper if you look around. For me, I stop noticing 1080p on a 42" screen at about 2.5-3 meters. Different people have different opinions. Best thing would be to get a side by side comparison going and judge it for yourself.

The PX70 and PZ80 also have different contrast ratios (PX - 10,000:1; PZ - 30,000:1).

I was in the same dilema: went to local Panny dealer initially to buy the PX70 but ended up buying the PZ80. I couldn't tell the difference between the two either but plumped for the better contrast ratio and an additional HDMI input.
