You need to look in your iTunes preferences and see what Import Settings you have. This will tell you what format the music is being encoded at on your computer and thus how compressed it is.

Thats going to come down to your import setting. As far as I remember the default import setting on itunes is 128kbs which is heavily compressed.Ideally storage (space allowing) you should change this to lossles from your preferences options. The compression you import at will be the same that export to your ipod. There is a way of setting up another library of compressed songs to fit more on your ipod.

If I read your question correctly then the answer is that the compression of the imported CD will be same as ends up on the ipod. So if you import CDs losslessly then it will be lossless on your ipod. That is why you can fit more 128kbps tracks onto the same ipod as lossless tracks, because there the compression is 700kbps plus.

That's on the money.

This is why people are more often importing their CDs as lossless and having a separate playlist / library for a 128kbps or 320 kbps version of the song which they then use to sync their iPod with.
