Hi all,

I purchased a Sony 40W4500 after months of
deliberation over which tv to buy, mainly down to the outstanding
review what Hi-fi gave it. Even though i had seen on here previously
reports of clouding i decided to take the risk and go for
it........Unfortunately mine had bad clouding mainly in the top and
bottom right corners.

So i took it back to where i got it from as they said they had
some more in stock to exchange, on the phone, but they couldn't reserve
it as they had less than 5 in stock :S so i popped down there ready to
exchange (the picture quality was awesome so wanted another another
one) but somone else had gone in with the same problem on the same set
and already claimed the spare one in stock, so i couldn't have one in
exchange! Arghh

the store said it was a common problem with that
set and kind of talked me into getting a Samsung LE 40A756.....which i
did, but to be honest i'm not so sure this is such a good set as the
sony in general and kind of feel a bit gutted at not having the sony
anymore, despite its problems and i'm annoyed at myself at being so
impulsive haha

i use the tv alot for gaming (360 and ps3) and
have since read that the samsung suffers from input lag and has a high
response time, which is obviously somethign i def don't want! there is
a game mode on it to lower response time but when you use game mode it
FORCES you to use a pre-set colour set-up, which is awful, so thats
pretty much useless.

Also the 100hz Motion Plus seems awful
compared to Sony's Motionflow, as i was watching soccer am earlier and
they had some footy clips on there and it just couldn't cope with the
ball movement at all, it was jerky and left a trail of the ball when a
long pass was made.....infact it worked better when i turned 100hz
off...i thought this is what it was supposed to improve?!? i didn't
have any of this with the sony.

The remote control also feels vague at best while navigating through the menu's, minor annoyance i know, but amplified by the fact it wasn't like that on the sony

That said, Blu-rays do look
awesome and now i have had a play with the colours it does seem to be a
pretty decent picture....i just kind of feel a bit like i've settled
for 2nd or 3rd best when i set out to get the best set i could for the
money, to keep me happy for a fair few years! i felt like that with the
sony as that was awesome in all respects(clouding aside), but not so
much with the samsung.

SO, really, what i'm eventually getting to is haha,

1. What are your general opinions on this and what would you do?

2. What consumer rights do i have if i wanted to exchange or refund the tv not because of a fault (the tv is less than 7 days old and have full packaging still)

3. Are there any other tv's u would recommend for the same sort of money?

4.
I'm tempted to get the Z4500 as that was my original choice, but went
for w4500 as it was a bit cheaper...but have read this suffers from
clouding as well? (can get z4500 for £1239)

5. am i being too picky and is the samsung really just as good, but needs setting up?

I just want to sort it all out before i can't exchange or refund anyhting!

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Nick

I cannot be that helpful on your rights but if you spent all that and you are not happy, i would *** like hell!

I too was all for the Sony 4500W until they put their head in the sand on the clouding, next up for me is the Z but once a manufacturer plays the game they kind of lose my faith and i am more likely to hang back on spending out even more £'s incase they think that is the way the customer should be treated!

well i have done the same sort of thing as you. I went to buy the W4500 after lots of thought, but the stockists didnt have any in and said there is a big wait as they are so popular.... so i impulsed bought a samsung series 8. Got it home and thought picture was a bit naff and had i gone and made a stupid mistake. Went back to shop to ask for refund, they said ok but would have to pay a charge as they cant sell it as new anymore. I kept it a few more days before deciding. The problems were remote didnt work all the time, SD picture didnt seem great.... some blue ray pictures too werent great...thought it was all down to my tv. After a few days the SD picture became better and better and i swear it wasnt just me getting used to it. I took my blueray to parents who have a panasonic and the same problems that i thought were on my tv happened on theirs(grainy picture) so i new my tv was fine. I then replaced the free batteries that came with remote for good ones. The remote now works perfect! I too do alot of gaming and think the picture is excellent for gaming. Yes i also heard samsungs have a bit of a high response time, but i used to have a plasma and i havent noticed any difference. Overall im sticking with my tv and think its just in the head that sony tv is gonna be so much better! I very much doubt it is. Yes it probably wins on some factors but samsung probably wins on other factors. Its not likesony is the best tv and nothing else compares. There are many good tvs made by different companies...only you can decide what you prefer. The samsung 7 series did get 5 stars by what hifi which means EXCELLENT. So how different can it be? It seems that because you have posted this question tho ,that you already know the answer of have you made a mistake? If you were happy with the samsung you wouldnt be asking. So go and get the sony so your mind is at rest and happy watching.

OK, well I suppose the very first thing I would do is get the refund. That way you are not out of pocket and basically back where you started. Time costs nothing...if you have an old TV to fall back on then do so. This will enable you to lick your wounds as it were and source another / different TV. The longer you wait the more money you can add, ultimately ending up with the TV of your dreams. Remember time costs nothing - get the refund

Thanks for your reply's

I'm thinking that i may just swing back Sony's way, either exchange it back for a W4500 or rock the boat and ge a Z4500 instead......i had only 1 issue with the sony and that was slight clouding, which i've read has dissapeared after a couple of months or so for a few people anyways......but i have a few niggly issues with the samsung! the most annoying now being that the 100hz option has to be switched OFF for football?!? which is the sort of thing its supposed to help eh?!

Just to ask once more, Anyone know what sort of consumer rights i would have in getting a refund-exchange on a set i'm not happy with...but has no fault? again, had the set less than 7 days...
