IKEA Kallax for LP storage?

I want to replace sone functional but scruffy Habitat cubes that I store my LPs in. They must be over forty years old and have survived several moves, however something smarter is what I am looking for.

Does anyone use Kallax for this? I'm looking at the 4x2 cube style, set vertically The only snag I foresee is they have no backs, so care will probably be needed to stop the records slipping right through. But are they stable and rigid enough?

Yes on all counts. If you're concerned about the records going through the back, either fit some mdf or hardboard or buy some of the door units that Ikea do for the purpose, which have sides and a back.

Only most of the planet! If there were aliens on another planet somewhere, and they used vinyl, chances are, they'd be using Kallax for record storage.

To stop albums being pushed through to the back, you could glue in some bits of wood (not sure what they're called, but they're very thin, thinner than drum sticks, and square shaped) along the back where you want the records to stop. probably be able to pick something up from an arts and crafts store. That's all that's needed, but I suppose you can use larger wood too.

I've heavily modified a nice light oak Ikea wardrobe to make a custom hi-fi rack. If nothing else, I can say my design is the only one in the world! Before that I was using an MFI larder unit.

(Both these were chosen for their depth - so that all interconnections could be within the cabinet. Wheels were added for easy access)

Don't knock it till you try it as they say - though from what I've read, most poster's wives would never allow it.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions!

I'm happy to make an IKEA unit, but less keen to modify one, though I'm sure it's easy enough.

The icubes look interesting too - complete with partial backs. Thanks, chebby. I'll pass on the fluorescent ones though!

I'd avoid icube, paint quality and finish isn't the best and the customer service is non existent. Check out their reviews. I've got two of the units and the paint has flaked on both. Kallax are much better value for money as are the glorious record box range.

Thanks for tip. I thought they looked decent on their website but was thinking I might try a Kallax first, as I could always use it in my study if it didn't work in the living/music room.
