I have an Ipod classic and want to use it as a source for my hifi as well as CDs. I'm about to buy a new CD player and amp with a budget of approx £1500, so how do I get the best sound?
Digital transport like the Onkyo ND-S1 and then a DAC to do the digital analogue conversion.
Wadia also make a pricier transport. These options would mean CD quality, and the quality would depend on the DAC you used. You could also consider getting a CD player or amp that lets you use it as a DAC.
If you were just interested in a dock, the only dock with a DAC that I know of isn't available outside of Japan, so maybe something like Arcam's iPod dock. It wouldn't be as good as a CD player because the relatively poor quality DAC in the iPod would be doing the digital to analogue conversion.
niklawson:The CD player / amp with DAC sounds better, something like the new Audiolabs would be in my price range. Any other alterantives?

chudleighpaul:Since when is an ipod Hi Fi?
Since you could take the digital files (stored as WAV or ALAC) and send them, untouched, to an external DAC and then onto your Hi-Fi.
In this instance, the iPod would be replacing the CD itself, whereas the Digital Dock and DAC would replace the CDP.
If you want to use an ipod as well as CDs you could just connect the ipod to the amp with a GQ-24 cable.
However, I would go the whole hog and have your PC connected to your hifi via a DAC and then you can access a whole wrold of online music from internet radio stations to LastFM to streaming sites such as Spotify. That is the future of music.
