I let the wife make the call - now some help and reassurance

Hi - staff and forum posters from the few posts I've made on the forums you'll have seen I've been deliberating getting a new set since January, knowing CES was round the corner I decided to wait and then being a bit of a Sony Fan I decided to wait to see the new W4000 model. Which I actually thought looked quite nice when I saw it the other day, but definately seemed to suffer from a bit of noise on the image (SD)

Having changed my mind on numerous occassions I finally got the wife to make the call and she's sure we should go plasma for the simple reason we've got a two year old lad with more on the way and at least we won't have to worry about sticky fingers, cars being run up and down a plasma screen compared to an LCD one (he's really good, not some demon 2 year old, but accidents do happen). Which I must admit is the main thing that stopped me going and buying a W3000.

so for resassurance -- I know most of you are plamsa peeps anyway but right call?

and then if thats so I was going to get the 42PZ80, but just wanted to check whether the Pioneer 428(0) was worth the extra dosh or are the new pannys comparable - I saw the online review today and thats great but how would it compare to the Pioneer?

If i get get reassurance I'll go purchase one this week to stop me from delaying any longer and ending up with the W4000 --- editors feel free to hint at the outcome of the 40" shoot out if you think I should wait!!

how much of an issue is the comment "Pictures could be a touch sharper and clearer " from the review - presumably not much to get a 5 star?

I saw another review which stated that HD pictures of the PZ85 were quite possibly the best they had ever seen so they can't be that bad.

Just to add to your selection dilemma, it has to be mentioned that the forthcoming 800-series Panasonic plasmas have toughened screens, especially designed to withstand attacks from little fingers/Nintendo Wii remotes/Fisher Prices's finest etc.

If only the security screws on the back were the same, we could have all avoided a lot of heartache.

I'm hoping this saga ends tomorrow but last question......

I can get hold of the pioneer 4280 for £1150 which seems a cracking price for the unit.
bearing in mind I sit 10-13 ft away from the screen (42 is biggest I could squeeze into the tv space so please don't say go bigger) predominantly watch freeview with thoughts of getting either sky hd or freesat, and enjoy a bit of gaming and film watching after the wife retires for the evening, would you advise the 4280 over the current panasonic range -- is it still the reference TV?

in store is almost impossible to tell, pz picture definately looked softer, px looked OK as did the W4000 (and the bloke int he sony punching the screen to show that they are tougher than believed was a sight to behold) -- Pio looked the bees in terms of build quality but in store with god knows how many tv's running from the feed they do all look much of a muchness

so for 10-13ft at 42 inch which I assumes makes the 1080p query pretty much redundant, is the pio the right call for mainly SD and is it worth the £300-500 over the PX-PZ's?

thanks for any replies --- hopefully off to order one tomorrow for delivery wednesday
