I have the Sony Bdp S350 blu ray and was wondering am I able to connect my laptop to my player with an ethernet cable using the wifi on my laptop so that I can update my player.

If not can any one recommend any other way that is not to technical.

Does your blu-ray player have an ethernet connection? if it does just connect it to your router, job done.

Assuming you can't just connect the player direct to your router, It should be possible to do it the way you want to: you'll probably need a crossover Ethernet cable rather than a standard one, and the ability on the laptop to share its internet connection with devices networked to it.

Alternatively, you could burn the upgrade to a CD-R disc, and use that to upgrade your player.

My router is down stairs which is why I wanted to try it this way and I have tried doing what it tells me on the website on how to download the files to disc and it just doesn't work.

I'm prepared to be corrected but I don't think this'll work. Each device is usually assigned its IP address by the router. If they're not plugged into it they may well self assign addresses but then they'll probably not be on the same network...

Plus - isn't the ethernet connection on the 350 only for software updates and BD live etc? I don't think it'll read anything from your laptop even if you get them talking...

It'll work fine.

Turn on laptop and player. Connect with crossover cable. Pull up the network settings, highlight wired and wireless connection. Right click and pick "bridge network connection".
