How to achieve synergy?

I have been auditioning a lot of gears lately and have come to realize that synergy is the key to achieving sonic bliss. What constitutes synergy? Is it in the specifications? Is blind matching the only way to find out? Is it about combining the strengths of each component and making up its weaknesses? Please do share, and perhaps give examples from your experiences. For me, it was an eye-opening experience to hear Fatman itube work its magic with Wharfedale Diamond 9.1, or Rega Brio 3 with R3. Absolutely wonderful!

Its simply about taking time to listen to different things. Sometimes its sheer luck, you know the moment you walk in somewhere and you think 'bloody hell ... this sounds nice'. Then there are places like this forum where some people with experience can help prevent costly mistakes or just suggest good matches. There's a good section at the back of the current 'Ultimate guide' that touches the subject. At the end of the day though we all like different things so synergy is something that is personal and as such has to be judged with your own ears.
