Just about to place my order for the Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray Player and a SONY STR-DA2400ES to match, but can not stop reading the review/awards article of the YAMAHA DSPAX863SE.
Has anyone compared the two and if so is there a big difference? I have been put off the Yam because the first amp I owned had to be repaired twice with a 'Dry joint' issue.
What makes the decission harder I have just seen one advertised for £494 at Digitech Electronics.

Is it better? For everyone it is certainly not better.

Listen to both of them. Then check the specs of both. Check best prices. Then you make your choice.

I did that, and then bought the Sony

Thanks Boopolo, this is the reason for which I ask & read reviews because the nature of my business allows me not the time audition and when I do, on passing, they have nither one or the other!! Best was when I asked at the Sony centre not only was they aware of the Sky issue, they never heard of the 2400ES!
Why are employed to sell high end audio, when they are not intrested is beyond me.
Finally what spec difference is there, because from what I see they both upgrade HDMI, do all audio formats and within reason expel the same power.

Hi, recently changed my Pioneer VSX-LX50 amp and managed to demo the Denon 1909, Yamaha DSP AX-763 & 863, and Sony 2400es, all on KEF3005se's in the same demo room.

I am a fan of sony amps and had a 910 & 1200 in the past, as well as an Onkyo 605 & Denon, (yes I change kit often) but the 2 Yamaha's where head and shoulders over the rest in terms of placement of effects and sound quality.

I went for the 763 in the end, but the 863 was the best on test, but I did not need the upscaling & extra HDMI, although the 763 is a little less powered also. But the 763 sounded to have more authority than the 2400es.

You can read the spec/overview etc on the 2400 here . This is the USA model. The UK model does not have the satellite radio sockets. You can use optical audio together with HDMI video (needed sky DD5.1) through the receiver since the firmware upgrade.

The 2400 got five stars in WHF review.

The Yamaha is £100? more expensive.

It has only 3 hdmi inputs. The spec sheet here on WHIFI site says only one of the three HDMI input ports support Video (I imagine that this is a typo. staff?) and all three support audio.

The Yahaha has not got a radio tuner.

I think this is the USA version of the Yamaha again with satellite imput ports.

How much better was sounds in 863 over 763?

I'm in the same situation I don't really need upscaling and 2 HDMI inputs would be ok for now.

I want to use AV Receiver as a DAC for AppleTV so that's why sound is important to me.

Thanks guys, now I am getting somewhere. Just a couple of questions of which I am confused about, the upscaling of video signals is only for the composite/s-video, so does that mean it will not upscale the standard definiton HDMI SKY signals, is this for both amps or do they differ and does the Yam offer the 24frames per second cinema feature, is this down as something like 24Hz

The Yamaha 863 upscales analogue only, not HDMI. Not sure about the Sony.

Cheers, thanks for that, so basicly what I have to do is make a analog conection and then alter the Sky output to watch SD upgaded.
How hard can it be for the guys at Sony, Yam etc to sort that out, HDMI surposed to be the future, now I'm having to go back to using phono cables. Unbelivable!!

Apologies. I put wrong link in for WHIFI spec. which may have caused more confusion. My link is corrected now.

Maybe Andy, Clare or Richard could correct the error on the spec sheet

I do not think you have to alter sky box. It will output both HDMI and component at the same time.

With The DA2400es you would just need to setup a different imput button for sky SD. The input would be component and the same optical you are using for normal SAT. The output to tv would not change because the receiver can upconvert incoming component signals and output them through the HDMI. I have not tied this yet but it says so in the manual on page 34.

For those with a non-HD sky box the same applies with standard video signal in; HDMI out. Sound would of course be two phonos in.

Thanks Andrew.

It would be obvious to most people that it was a typo, but maybe not everyone.

The reason I bumped thread was because wth lots of threads here, many go off the first few pages very quickly
