nick46:, the other day my daughter came downstairs and asked me to turn it down, and she is only 19,

Great ain't it. When I was 19 it was me being told to turn it down, it shows how the world has changed.

john dolan:When i say the loudest i listen is 70db i mean 70db as measured with a sound meter at the listening position which is not the same as a readout on a volume control. Also saying 9 or 10 oclock on the dial means nothing as the volume would be wildly different between speakers of different sensitivity.Be careful guys loud music can and will do permanent damage to your hearing.

Damn right: Row A in front of a Turbosound PA for a Genesis gig in 1982 confirmed that for me. Motorhead a few months later reaffirmed my thoughts on the matter. Still saw them about 15 times though...!

Fish from Marillion? He's 6' 6" so I would turn it down!

John Dolan, that does not surprise me one bit. I bought the LP-12 sometime after the ikimi and was completely gob smacked by the quality over cd. I work away and asked my wife to take the turntable to my dealer for a needle change, not a simple job. What did she do? Buy the cheapest one on offer. Totally ruined the sound. So I will need to upgrade the needle to get back to the sound I had before.Your turntable must be a cracker, it says it all when you're bettering cd playback.

My Arcam doesn't do o'clocks, it's just -db electronic stuff - anyway, I've used -10db before (that's about 65 out of 72) and it was LOUD!!!!! Normally, around the -30db to -25db mark which is quite loud enough.

My ol' JVC is much more fun though: 8 o'clock = loud 9 o'clock = very loud 10 o'clock = ultra loud 11 o'clock = gut wrenchingly loud 12 o'clock = windows are gone but it never introduces distortion!

Not Fish himself, just fish in a tank...

the record spot:How about 3 o'clock...? 4?

I think it would probably distort then, but I'm not going to find out with 89db sensitivity speakers!

The Marantz amp I have goes up to 11 o'clock which is about as loud as I want it to be, 10 o'clock is better though - very dynamic.

The Technics will go further but again, no distortion. It gets too loud for me to be comfortable after that; very powerful amp and the speakers don't wobble a bit. Very impressive, but if I need a PA, I'll get one of these:-

My neighbour ran away when the snow started to fall! So I've been turning it up to about 11 o'clock recently, oh joy.I don't take it much past 9 o'clock normally, I don't like to annoy other people.
