Hey

I just bought a Pioneer VSX-819, Now every question I ask, gets a response, like... Those speakers wont sound good with that amp, as they are too bright ect.

How do you know?

I would like to find out myself, so I can chose some quality speakers, and not have to ask all the time, will these sound good.

Thanks guys

You listen to them.

Course it depends how well served you are with quality specialists - I once had a pair of B&W speakers on loan from the retailer to check out, and I did a deal with him up front - I can get them cheaper on line but if I buy 'em I'll buy 'em from you at on-line plus a bit. I ended up just walking back in with a cheque so everyone was happy!

Nothing's better than just sitting down at home, second best is a demo theatre, third is listening at a mate's house, worst is buying off the page.

Best thing something like What HiFi can do is set up an audition list. Best audition is your favourite film/cd.

If you're in Canada as your name implies I know this might seem a bit fictional as some places are far between and you'd have to get a flight to an enlightened dealer (apologies if you're in somewhere well served like Toronto) but it's the way to go. Try negotiation - I'm gonna buy one of these here three and here's a deposit if I can try them at home. Won't work at a superstore, an independent would 'get it'.

The only opinion you'll get from others is what they liked, and the only opinion worth having is yours.Shortlist on say-so, never buy if you can help it.

JohnDuncan:And the award for Most Sense Spoken In Forum Debut goes to... I'm more of a Nescaf‚ man (Cap Colombie, specifically) though.

Kinda didnt understand that.. LOL

Anyway, I live in cardiff (From Edmonton ab), and not sure whats around, will have to look, I have a RS in canton, and have bought a tv from them ,so will go in there, but they have no viewing room, unless its upstairs or something,, Quite a small shop as its so poular.

I have no mates that are into this type of thing, thats what kids will do to you, your mates stop calling ... LOL

I guess I will have to drive around cardiff and check the yellow pages, But like I said I have never heard a 40,000 speaker system, so they could sound th same as a 1,000 if the sales guy told me.. .LOL, I would not go that far, but you know what I mean.

I reall want the wharfdale 9.1 in the front as everyone says they are good, but somthing small (Like mission cubes) in the rear, I have done a previous thread, but like my post says, people say they wont sound good. ect.

Thanks

karlmc:You also have an audio-t in Cardiff on Crwys Rd. Worth a visit.

It's just a hunch, but judging by the OP's name and the comment about Edmonton, I think Audio-~T might just be a bit too far to travel.

Perhaps Canada16 can clarify where he lives but he mentions he lives in Cardiff and there is a RS in Canton, Cardiff.

Indeed, but Audio-T also have a shop in Enfield, and that's very close to Edmonton...

I very much doubt you'd drink any coffee from Nestle if you studied their ethical policies, or lack of them.

I had a Milky Bar today as well. Am I going to hell?

Looks like it. Perhaps you can use some of your old speaker cables to whip the coffee pickers even more, at least then that old speaker cable will have a use as it doesn;t make any difference to sound quality.

Andrew Everard:I think it all went wrong when they stopped being Nessle and became Nesslay.

Brand name changes aren't always a bad thing. At least I no longer squirt bathroom cleaner all over my pancakes.

Hi

I used to live in canada, But now in cardiff, not understanding the coffee thing, must be an inside joke.

Anyway, been looking at the audio t site and they got some good deals, also will pop into RS as well.

Found some new mezzo 2's for 299.99 seriously thinking about buying, but its a lot of money.

@ the op. Its mainly experience with different brands and the audio quirks that each has, this gained through (for many of us) ownership and hours of loitering in hifi shops. I`d say just get the kit that seems right for you and see how you get on, the upgrade bug will hit and before you realise it you`ll know as much as anyone else about what sounds good.

LOL

Maybe I should do some miandering on the weekend, and start asking stupid questions, and if at the end, the sales guy, still has a smile on his face,, he gets the business.

That seems like a good plan, you could also stretch your search further by catching a train to maybe manchester and looking in shops there if hifi is hard to find in cardiff (or edmonton).

Once the hifi hobby gets a hold you find yourself taking any opportunity to listen to kit. I was in a craft shop a while back and noticed they had a B&O hifi, so I asked for a nosey! I have auditioned various headphones using the listening posts in the likes of HMV. There is quite a turn over of headphones as people keep breaking them. I have been warned I will be thrown out of a pub if I didnt get down from the table I was standing on, so I could listen better to their speakers. Fopp record shop uses various good quality speakers, such as B&W. Get creative!
