You could play it, but would be woefully underselling the capabilities of the CD player - it'd be the equivalent of pairing the Naim with a @£200 stereo amp (and probably still wouldn't time as well).

ok thanks Claire, but if there was a home cinema amplifier out there for £500 or less what would it be?

Well the answer today is the Onkyo TX-SR606 (full review here) - it's currently the best home cinema receiver under £500.

However, it's not very musical, and there's new competition at the price point due from Denon, Pioneer and Yamaha next month.

If you dont need hd audio decoding then the cambridge audio 540r or 640r are very good with stereo sound, probably the best under £600

I found the CD5i to sing more when connected to the matching Nait with a DIN. Home cinema amps cannot be used for music.

Naim is Holmes, can i ask why you have your heart set on an AV amp? i know surround sound can be quite enjoyable but 2 channel (stereo) sound through a quality stereo amp with decent speakers in also very enjoyable and means you only need one amp and one pair speakers. just an idea...

im not that confused mind you, its just that i cant afford over £2000 for the nait 5i AND a home cinema amplifer along with the naim cd5i and the neat motive 2 speakers.

The motives and the cd5i come up to £1795 alone. it is in 2 years time as well though so the prices could vary by going up and down.
