Apologies for another thread, but just need some quick advice as I have to make a decision on whether to buy this amp. The guy has just checked the amp out for me in response to my various questions and says there is some slight "crackle" on the volume at level 6. I'm not likely to be playing it at around those levels, so is this likely to be a problem? Thanks guys.

Not necessarily, but it could be. Might be that a further £50 (maybe less) on a service to have the fascia removed and an internal clean, not least around the volume pot, would be money well spent.

Yes, definitely a service as RS says. Dirt in the volume pot is usually the cause if you hear the crackle when turning the knob, but it could be something more serious.

A clean I can cope with, what's the more serious bit?

I don't know the internal structure of the A400, but my own amp has a sealed Alps volume pot which is virtually impossible to get into without detailed knowledge of the pot itself. Doubt the Pioneer has this, almost certain in fact and it's likely a clean will do it. The service engineer should know pretty well and give you an idea.

Sizzers, in answer to your question, replacement of the component if that's what it is, but the service engineer as RS says will be able to locate the problem and give you an estimate.

Thank you for all of your replies.

Unless anything happens his side I'm going ahead to buy it. Will obviously fully check it out, but if the only problem is a small "crackle" at level 6 then that should be okay as it will never be played at that volume. Hopefully the soft artists paint brush will sort it!

Thanks again, Malc.
