I currently own a Yamaha RXV 2600 and When i play a blu Ray movie with HD audio it displays on the amp either PCM, LPCM or MPCM can someone exlpain to me are all 3 of these giving me true HD sound because they all sound as good as one another? I am playing through a Sony BDPS 360 Blu Ray player...

Hi,

Sounds like your player is decoding the sound onboard and sending it to the amp - if you change settings on the player to allow the amp to decode, you'll light up the TrueHD/DTSHD lights.

What you are listening to is still HD sound though.

2 things worth mentioning here:

First of all, the Yammy 2600 doesn't have onboard decoding for any of the new HD Audio formats, so there won't be any lights to illuminate ! The player is doing the decoding, and sending it to the Yammy as Linear/Multichannel PCM which the AVR will happily receive.

Secondly, have you got a 1080p display, and if so are you sending your video to the Yamaha first or straight to your display ?

I ask this, as the 2600 will not pass through 1080p video signals - which means that you're not watching your BD's at full 1080p resolution.

...of course - this is another good point!! Teach me for answering without checking specs of equipment!! Lol.

Lol no worries. I've got a 2600 in the bedroom here, and it's still a superb piece of kit.

Strange. My 2600 can't even if I try to force it ? Though I have heard reports of some later 2600 units being able to ? Weird eh !
