I've been out of the country and away from the 'modern world' for a few years... and have come back to find myself missing some techno-education...

The last TV I bought was a tube 100hz Toshiba, in the region of 800 pounds, 4 years ago or so (What HIFI 5-Star rated), and now I have come back to a different world.

Few of the reviews for LCDs seem to mention hz, are they now defunct by scaling? Also, should I buy a dvd player that upscales standard DVDs (I have been looking at the new Onkyo DV-SP406) do I need a 1080p TV in order to see the upscaling - otherwise is the task redundant?

To provide a real example, I was intending on buying the Onkyo, along with the Sony KDL-32P3020. (I see that the TV is now under my 400 pound TV budget, giving me a package for under 500, which is what I need).

Any advice (& education) is greatly appreciated - thanks!

Its down to whatever the native screen is. The sony your thinking of buying has a resolution of 1366x768

Hidef is 720 or 1080 which means that if the dvd played scaled to EITHER the sony would have to scale it AGAIN

So basically the dvd player would be better just sending a standard dvd signal (SD) and the sony scales itself (meaning scaled just the once)

There ARE tvs with true hi def but I woudlnt worry about that too much if I were you (Only comes into it with hidef tv (sky or virgin), blu rays or hi def gaming really)

As the tv is 32" its virtually impossible to tell any difference between 720 and 1080 anyways
