Help in setting up a marantz nr1601

I was bought a Marantz nr1601 for christmas and are having problems setting it up. I am new to this all this. I a have a Blu-ray dvd, ps3 sky hd and Apple tv. I have connected them through the hdmi connections with good cables. The problem that I have is that the only way I can get dolby digital 5.1 surround sound is to connect through the optical connection and go in to the set up and change between the units that are connected and that a royal pain in the arse. I must have it set up wrong. I cant beleave that a modern hdmi amp would only let you have to units connection at the sound time that could play dolby digital. I hope this makes sense and that some one can put me out of my misery

I have no experience with your particular amp, but the only component out of your list that will not transmit a 5.1 signal through the HDMI is the sky box, you will have to use your optical for that piece of kit I'm affraid.
