I bumped into these forums when looking for a pre amp for my old Dual 604 with DMS 240 E MM cartridge. I think the Cambridge Audio 540P has just about everything I am looking for. My local hifi store has a second hand in store I can have for 50 EUR. Only downside is that I cannot use it when I upgrade later on to a MC cartridge.
