I am looking to upgrade the apple headphones which came with my iPod. I dont use them that much but I am really looking for a pair of headphones which are a little more comfortable, are suitable for use in the gym, trains and planes and are ideally noise isolating........

I am thinking of either the Shure SE110's or the Sennheiser cx300.

I understand that both of these should fit the bill and wonder which would be the better of the two.

The Shure earphones are superior-sounding, and better at noise-isolation - though the latter comes thanks to a very snug fit that not everyone gets on with (the Sennheisers are less invasive). If you can, try before you buy.

I've had e3cs and cx300s and the Sennheisers fit more comfortably, and tbh there wasn't a great deal of difference - has been a long time since the Shures clapped out on me but I seem to remember they weren't as bassy. The Senns have lasted longer as well (though admittedly am on my second pair).

And nobody's gonna let you try in-ears before you buy.........

The 'SE' Shures are more robust than their "EC" predecessors.

And I was thinking more 'borrow a friend's pair' than 'cut open the packet in the Apple Store' re trying

But seriously... that's why you get a pack of spare earbuds with the Shures.
