Hi,

I have Acer Aspire 6930G with a S/PDIF output via the headphone port. It states in the manual its OPTICAL (which I presume would be a toslink) to my Yahama Amp? - the lead with red light.

I have a toslink Optical lead which fits in the digital toslink in the amp but not in the laptop?

Do I have the wrong lead, or do I need an adapter? If an adapter is needed would it be the 3.5mm jack to toslink? If so, will I loose the digital sound?

Sorry about all the questions.

P.S. Sorry forgot to say, I am only wanting to use the SPDIF output as the amp I have - Yamaha RX3620RDS doesn't support HDMI - so any movies that i'll watch via the laptop BLURAY player will be connected to the TV via HDMI and the output of sound via SPDIF to the amp :) Hope this all makes sense.

Steve.

Thanks for getting back to me. Surely I would need Toslink to mini 3.5mm not mini Toslink? As described in the picture but not their description.

Would I need male to male ?

I was about to answer but daveh75 has already given you a link that will sort your problem out. It sounds as though you have, but just make sure your laptop does have a headphone port that doubles as an optical out as not all laptops have this feature. Assuming it does, it is the best way to connect to your amp as it has the best sound quality when used with a good DAC.

Or you could buy one of these. Although I cannot comment on the quality of that product in particular.

I have wondered about this in the past.

ignoring the potential sonic differences between different digital cables, which have been debated at length on here,

It seems a bit odd that there are not very many of these 3.5 mini-toslink to toslink cables on the market. Taking a well made cable and then putting a hokey adaptor on the end seems a but odd.

Does the Chord OptiChord come with an adaptor or is is fixed? There are other options from Lindy too on Amazon

any others?

zzgavin asks 'any others'

I use an Ixos 3.5 mini-toslink to toslink.....works a treat....from the auction site. Think it cost me 8 squids.

Looky Here

These are good......use one myself

just got one of the ixos 108-100 cables

6 quid is pretty cheap, not very keen on adaptors, then get lost so easily
