I currently have a non blu ray upscaling denon dvd player and a humax freeview box. Both are connected directly to my panasonic plasma tv using hdmi cables for picture and connected using optical cables to my av amp ( a yamaha a few yrs old with NO hdmi inputs) for sound.

I am now thinking about buying a blu ray player, upgrading to hd picture by buying a freesat box and buying a new av amp/receiver with hdmi inputs.

My query is this, and i apologise if it seems a bit daft but i am a little out the loop these days on hdmi av receivers, can i connect up my new blu ray player and freesat box the same way i have my current set up or does it all have to go through the new amp using hdmi cables?

In other words hdmi cables from freesat and blu ray connected direct to tv for picture and optical or coax cables from blu ray and freesat direct to amp to carry sound OR do I have to connect the blu ray player and freesat box direct to the hdmi amplifier using hdmi cables and then connect the amp direct to tv with an hdmi cable, thus dispensing with co ax and optical cables?

I would prefer to connect direct to my tv as i cant help thinking that sending the picture through the amp with hdmi cables is a much longer route with extra processing as opposed to direct hdmi connection to the tv for picture.

Any help would be much appreciated.

HDMI has a bigger bandwith for sound, so really you are best just connecting HDMI from blu-ray player to the amp then to the tv, the amp will just pass the video through & extract the audio, if you use the co-ax you won't get the full fat audio & you will miss out on some of the audio.

If you upgrade you amp now the advice would be as slewis said for the bluray player.

However if you're just going to get a bluray player and get the amp later I would suggest you get one with multichannel analogue outputs (LG BD390 or similar) and connect the sound to the amp that way (assuming your amp has analogue ins). This way you'll get HD sound. For the video side use hdmi to the tv.

For your freesat/Sky/Virgin box use an optical for sound and hdmi to the telly. None of the tv channels have hd sound so the optical is adequate. If you were to get Sky or VirginMedia the hdmi only carries stereo anyway.

ok,thanks for that. Sounds like hdmi cable is the way to go as i plan to get blu ray player and amp at the same time.
