I would like to get the Panasonic BD35 and as it has DTS HD and other HD decoding, I wondered if it will work through my old Sony analogue receiver?

Sorry, not sure how it works.

Hi, I'm afraid your in the same position as me with a Pioneer VSX-AX3 no HDMI. the 35 has'nt got multi cannel outputs so that you can connect your amp, you will have to go for the 55. as it has multi channel outputs on the rear to feed into your amp

To get the HD sound you would need a HD equipped receiver or a receiver with 7.1 analogue inputs and a BD player with the 7.1 analogue outputs. (The BD player would need to be able to decode on-board but I would assume that if it had the outputs it would also have the necessary decoding ability.)

So, I think that with the Panasonic you would more than likely be going with one of the newer models. I think the BD80 is the replacement for the BD55 and may have the necessary connections but I will have to check.

Does the Sony receiver have the necessary inputs??

Many thanks all for the quick replies.

Messiah, my Sony is the STR-DB830 and TBH I don't know what I'm looking for, still at the upward slope of the learning curve.

Pity the BD35's no good as the others are a bit out of my price range (money all went on a Pio 5090), that's why I was hoping to get HD without changing the receiver just yet.

Are there any other BD player's that will do what I want at a reasonable price you could recommend?

Thanks

Right, I have done some investigating and the good news is that your receiver has 5.1 analogue inputs. (These are located to the left of the speaker binding posts) However, this is not the full 7.1 that is available but I don't think this will be an issue for a couple of reasons. First of all 5.1 will still provide excellent sound and second there are not many discs (at the moment) utilising the full 7.1 anyway.

So for a player you would probably be looking in the region of £300 for a decent player with Analogue outputs such as the Pioneer BD51. Or the new Panasonic. You may also be able to pick up a cheaper Panny BD55 ex dem or just cheaper as it is being replaced.

Thank you for your time Messiah, much appreciated. Know what I'm doing now.

I'm not bothered with 7.1 as my rooms cluttered enough, and always been happy with 5.1 (famous last words).

I like the thought of the BD51 to link up with the 5090, and later go for a Pio receiver maybe. Guess I'll have to save a bit more.

I noticed a firmware update is due for the BD51 soon. Any idea if this is correct?

Daveeh75, Had a look at the Sony, and a bit concerned there is a worry about lower frequency output. What do you think?

Good price though. Cheers.
