HATE my new Sony LCD

I bought a Sony 32" LCD last year for the bedroom. It is the Bravia D series 100hz motion flow model (KDL32D3100). I think the picture is awful compared to my Fujitsu plasma. I wasn't that impressed with any LCD's in the shop but assumed I could get the settings as I wanted them at home, The colors are like cartoon colors and the contrast is dreadful. I have played around with settings but I cannot get a picture even remotely as warm and natural as my plasma. Is this just as good as it gets with LCD or does someone have a suggestion. I am not an expert but to my eye the Fujitsu and Pioneer plasma's absolutely cream any LCD products I have seen. PS The LCD panel went on it after 4 months (permanent horizontal green line on the screen). It is under warranty but a big bun fight with Sony getting it fixed. They wanted me to put it in the boot and bring it back to the shop!!! They took it away 10 days ago - no word yet. Frankly I'm not missing it because the crappy picture annoys me every time I watch it.

Thanks Frog. Didn't hate the picture in the shop just wasn't that impressed. I guess it isn't really that bad but you know when something annoys you a bit and ................ I also wouldn't say all plasma's have a great picture either - any Fujitsu and the Pioneer Kuro series are my favourites.

I think the biggest thing is the lack of warmth and the unnatural looking colors.

Speaking of stinging detail I just purchased a Sim2 Domino 80E projector for my theatre room. WOW is the only word to describe it especially with a blu-ray disc. It cost a fortune (at least for me) but worth every cent.

Well, to be honest, I'm not surprised that you hated the Sony. If you own a Fujitsu plasma, you've got something very special and it doesn't take an expert to see the gulf in picture quality. If you ask me, as far as SD video processing goes, it seems that the Pioneers have only just caught up. I don't think you're really going to find an LCD that has a chance of coming anywhere near your Fujitsu for picture quality until Pioneer launch their new Kuro LCDs later this year. I think the 32" and 37" models are due this summer.

It's a real shame Fujitsu exited the consumer plasma market. Their video processing set the bar really high. It's a shame they were never more widely available. I was lucky enough to see one in a custom installation a little while back. I was really impressed. You've got to admire Fujitsus unwillingness to compromise quality although it's said we won't see any more sets from them for the home market. Hopefully Pioneer won't go the same way.

No blu-ray or HD player hooked up to this but I do with my Fujitsu Plasma and my Sim2 Domino 80E as these are both superb.

As for the Sony LCD, it's back. It took them 3 weeks to fit a new panel (don't ask me why). The picture is still rubbish IMO.

Do people actually like the harsh unnatural picture that most (all?) LCD's produce?

Not really. But then, most people don't have a Fujitsu Plasma to compare them to. It's all about having a good frame of reference. The sad thing is that most people have never really seen a properly calibrated picture on a reference level display. It's not their fault - they've just never had or been given the opportunity.

I guess you must be right Fuzzy. Ignorance is bliss. The other thing I really noticed on the weekend is how awful it is when watching sport (Aussie rules football). It's like a moving blur of pixels when you look up close.

This is the 100hz Sony model as well.

Of course I will never go near anaother LCD but what does worry me is what I will replace my Fujitsu plasma with? I think they have stopped making them? Are the Pioneer Kuro's quite as good? Mmmmm a dilema I hope not to have to face for some time.

As for the Sony LCD I might see if I can sell it on ebay.

Well, I've never been able to see them side by side. I saw a 58 Series Fujitsu last year and was really impressed with the SD picture. At the time, it was the best I'd ever seen and after that I wasn't willing to compromise. The Pioneer reminded me of that once I had it set up properly but it's very hard for me to say which is better. I doubt you'd be disappointed by the Pioneer though, and I think it's the closest to the Fujitsu that you can currently get.

I watch Sky+ through mine and and am happy enough that I don't feel any need to upgrade to Sky HD any time soon. It's also brilliant with HD sources. If it's any help, I've read of a former Fujitsu 58 series owner on another forum who recently bought a 428XD. He's over the moon with it despite the fact that it took him a little while to warm to it initially. Pioneer have now stopped manufacturing the 428/4280XD and are switching production of smaller screens to LCDs so I'm not sure how much longer they're going to be around for.
