The Hd990 cd player has good reviews along with the hk 990 amp, just wondered if anyone had listened to the hd990 with the hk980 amp, as this amp is a third of the price of the hk990, thanks.

the 980 is very different to the 990. They have completely different sounds - the 980 is full on and up front - very like Rotel - whereas the 990 is extremely balanced.

If you can match the 990s together you have a dynamite combination that produces a sound way above its price point. I would be quick though as there has just been a price rise putting th HK990 at £1199

Thanks nick, 990 gets a good review and they bump the price up, it does look a nice bit of kit though, not really in the market yet to buy one, just thought it looked a bit differant to your nads, marantz, cambridge, etc. I will be buying in the new year, will keep a eye on the price, thanks again.

I dont know about safe - I have a 980 on my decks and it has loads of pace and drive. Of the many things I have run in that room the Harman pushes my Epos speakers along very nicely. The closest I can recall is a Rotel RB03 that I used to have.

Would you say the 980 is good for vocals, when you say it sounds like Rotel RB03 is that a good thing or not, my music tastes are prety wide and varied, i dont need loads of base, i know i will have to go and listen but just wanted to get a thought of how it sounds.

Thanks ear, would you say the hk 990cd/ 980amp would be as good as marantz 6003 pairing, i know its down to indvidual taste just wanted your thoughts on it,thanks.

not much help- only know marantz pm4001. wich i dont like...and i dont know the 990cd nor the 990 amp...only know the 980 amp sounds to polite but powerfull

the 980/990cd is in a similar league to the Marantz combo. I would pitch the 990cd as the better player though. Sound wise they are quite different. What speakers are you looking at ?

Thanks nick, as for speakers i do like the look of the wharfedale 10.1 or 10.2, but could go for floor standing instead, the size of the room is approx 5m x6m, wooden floors, ceiling hieght approx 2.5m. Budget for speakers up to £500, thank you.

I take it thats not a good idea then, is ther not anything you could stand them on (pads, etc) as i said i dont really mind, if standmount speakers are better for the room thats what i will use.
