Government to relax copyright laws to allow digital ripping for personal use

So, the Government is to relax the copyright rules to allow digital ripping to PCs, smartphones, tablets and MP3 players for personal use. Good idea or bad? What do you reckon? Full news story here.

Interesting, the British Video Association has just confirmed that "copy protection on DVDs and Blu-ray discs will still be allowed and can't be over-ruled".

Does that mean that they will copy protect DVDs & blu rays but it won't be illegal to still rip them?

I read it as if DVDs/BDs have copy protection you wont be able to rip them, given it's 'illegal' to circumvent it.

Just had an interesting update from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills:

"Film and video companies will remain free to use copy protection on their products."

Interestingly, they add: "However, individual consumers will be able to complain to the Secretary of State if they feel copy protection is too restrictive, and the Secretary of State will be able to intervene, if required, to ensure that consumers are able to benefit from the exceptions provided by law."

So that means you can bypass copy protection, but you'll have to complain first!

What if.....I rip my DVDs etc. & complain to the Secretary of State only if film/video companies stop me from doing it.... :?
